I have a theory that the special stages are like Sonic's Magicant,where a song his mother would sing hom every night plays and he just wants to be free like a bird,or conquer his fear like a fish

This special stage it's pure nostalgia the fish and the bird are art in wall and the back ground is a blue beatiful sky :)

I'd always this Special Stage music the most.I would never get angry when I failed getting an emerald. Heck, before I learned about mp3 and just for fun, I would just play around inside one the of the 7 stages (Six in the GBA version) and try and get every ring to kill time and have the song linger around more. Keep it up, mate.
