ESPRESSO ANATOMY - Do Puck Screens Work?

Published 2021-06-04
Lately I've been seeing more and more about puck screens, more specifically the Bplus version. This little piece of metal mesh is said to not only allow for a softer, more even application of water to your espresso, but also has other benefits like increased extraction. The barista in me had to know more, so I picked one up and got to work.

Another perfect video Spro - much appreciate the effort you put into this content.
  • Great video, thank you! I’m brand new to making espresso and just tried a screen today because my cheaper entry level machine was getting pretty bad channeling, no matter how diligent I was in dispersing and tamping. The screen really made a big difference with keeping this from happening, more compact, cleaner pucks and cleaner machine.
  • The B Plus gets an A+ This video, Priceless. Greatly appreciate your time, taste test, tds. Superbly done
  • Just wanna say I really appreciate your vids. Thorough and clear. Thanks for the content.

I've been waiting for this, awesome review! Definitely going to try this!

The screen has made a huge difference for me on the latter half of the shot. Great video!

Reduced channeling by itself would in theory lead to longer shot times. That might be sufficient explanation. Incidentally I highly recommend modding the group to a countersunk/flat bolt.. had the same issue with the puck divot back when I had my Silvia… used to rustle my ocd jimmies.

Thx for experiments, it's always interesting!

I’ve just bought the Shades of Coffee 50 micron version. V impressed, does what Sprometheus says. Just a little more time needed to clean the puck screen itself. Not sure if different screen mesh sizes would make much difference - Shades also offer a 200 micron version

For my Bezzera BZ10 HX machine this little screen is a game changer. This machine is set from the factory at something like 12 bar, I've adjusted it to as close as I could to 10 bar but that's as far as it will go. With the added and immediate pressure (no pre infusion) channeling has been an issue since day 1 to the point that I thought I would just upgrade my machine. No need to now, channeling issues are a thing of the past and I can extract lighter roasts without issue. Best $35 ever spent. These should and likely will be a standard one day.

Great video thanks for sharing what you know. 😀

Just join the channel, nice work, I've been using a Pesado screen for a while, but watching today, I learned a whole lot more regarding the outcome. Thanks! BTW, what kind of Distribution tool is that? Thanks
  • @abubarista
Solid video! Very curious to see how this could be incorporated in a cafe environment since they have to pull hella shots during the course of a few hours.

I knew you’d come through with some good knowledge on this. I was debating wether or not to add this to upcoming accessories but I think I’ll pass or put this further down my list. Doesn’t seem to really do much other than keep your machine cleaner. Great video.

i've been using this from October last year, and really happy with it 👍🏼

I've been doing the aeropress paper (top only) since seeing your vid on it and love the results. May have to spring for one of these.

Great video! I find the BPlus screen helps me a lot with consistent results for (ultra) light roasts. My technique is slightly different, in that I tamp with the screen already in place.
