Dubai was so smart. They realized oil wouldn’t last forever, so they decided to build a metropolis like city to bring in billions of tourism dollars and it all started with the Burj Khalifa.

Updated for July 2020: China has banned all skyscrapers over 500m. The Burj holds the title even longer!

We are only 140 years into building skyscrapers. It will CERTAINLY be overtaken. Maybe in a decade. Maybe in 10. Either way, a blink of an eye in human history.

Everyone forgets that the empire state building held the title of world's tallest building for 30 years. I think the burj khalifa will eventually be beat, but it'll take a time frame similar to how long the empire state building held onto the title.

Should've mentioned the proposed Mile High Tower in Chicago (The Illinois). Plan goes back to the late 1950s.
