On December 8, 1980, Dave Sholin and his RKO Radio crew interviewed John Lennon and Yoko Ono at their Dakota Apartment in Manhattan for over three hours. Tragically, it would be Lennon's very last interview—not one of the last—the last. He was shot dead just hours later in the very entryway of the building that Sholin and his crew had just left. Shot dead by a "fan" whom they had seen hanging around the Dakota as they left.

Sholin would receive the news after landing in San Francisco. The most incredible day of his life suddenly turned into a nightmare. Now that he had Lennon's last words in his hands, some of which were incredibly prophetic, his day lasted another three without sleep. He immediately was summoned to the station for live on-camera interviews with every news program including Good Morning America, which was going live at 4am PST (7am EST) to talk about John Lennon's tragic murder and the legacy he had left behind. The world was in deep mourning.

RKO Radio had planned to put together a fully produced radio program on Lennon based on this interview that would air the following month, but now they had just four days to get this out to a grieving public.

  • Cyn was a real woman and much as I love John he is right. He didn't know how to treat a real woman.

It's nice to here John Lennon say he was someone who liked to be liked.

The sad thing is that John seemed finally at peace within his own skin when he was shot..... such a great loss (and he would have been SO entertaining on the internet!) Miss him, miss him, miss him.....

Ironic, how ready he was to make his comeback, he sounded so determined, and strong in his thoughts. He was so sharp at that time in his life. By the way, there are a lot of great pictures in this clip, ones that I don't recall ever seeing before. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Long live the legend of John Lennon's life. RIP

I was in grade 9 when he was killed. I'm 53 now and it seems like yesterday. He was a true original, nobody comes close to John Lennon.

I found Lennon to be one of the most honest artist/celebrities I've ever heard. He was always interested in tearing down the mystique.

Imagine what John would be like on social medias. I really wish he was with us and he was taken away us unfairly. I miss a man I've never even seen on TV when he was alive...

The man was so talented and how dare someone take his life. It still makes me angry.

I have been a fan of Lennon almost from birth. Grew up in the 60s and had older siblings that played the music and it is deeply ingrained in me. Having said that, as a very mature woman now, it is plain to see that Lennon had an eating disorder, never really kicked drugs and was a psychological mess. He looked 60 when he died, not 40. I am astonished by how old he looked. I was young at the time and didn't see it then. wow

What a great composition here. Its been going on 35 years now and its unreal how I still mourn a man I never met but loved so dearly just as my father and sister...Great work here.. Thank you..

This man was a creative genius. The man and the creative genius are two separate things. He had a traumatic childhood. He tried to deal with this, through the lens of this fan in an area where there was relatively little knowledge of difference of trauma. We must cut him some slack as we must cut all people including myself some stop. Imagine.

I have been playing the Beatles and John's music throughout the day today to remember this great artist. What a great day it has been.

So grateful Yoko Sean Cyn and Julian got past the hurt and came together. They all deserve happiness.
  • Love his straight-talking honesty...not enough of it, in our very deceptive 21 century.
  • I will comment about John from interviews and he always comes across as honest I carnt comment about his personal life as I did not no him I have never been offended by him because I like him 🎸✌️
  • @GaryBook
Great interview, I used to love when he would show up on WNEW to be interviewed. I miss his insightfulness and what he had to say. Like Norman Mailer and James Baldwin, He always had something worth hearing . Thank you for posting this, it catches John in his final months. We lost him too soon.
