Beginner Kayak fishing - Drifting for halibut in Santa Barbara Ca

Published 2024-07-03
Today launched out of SB Harbor again hoping to get some more practice honing my skills drifting for halibut from my kayak. It was a foggy and quiet morning, glassy conditions and low wind, an absolutely beautiful day for being on the water. My friend Ray is showing me the ropes on halibut kayak fishing. We started trolling in 20’ and went out a deep as 80’ looking for that good hook up. There was a ton of bait on the surface and we had a few missed strikes and when out of nowhere a bait ball appeared with dolphins and birds.. there were also large barracuda in the mix. A boat next to us had a blast catching one after another right in front of us! It was fun to watch and listen to the joy of other anglers putting the hurt on these hard fighting fish. We tried and hooked up on a couple, but their size and extra sharp teeth broke us off quickly

Having a ton of fun learning about kayak fishing and gaining experience on the water here in my home town. This day felt a lot more confident compared to the last couple outings, I can tell my practice is starting to pay off.

Leave me a comment with some tips on how i can improve

dope man! I wanna get out there with ya soon! My first kayak adventure in Goleta a few weeks ago was hilarious. I fell off while taking a piss and got soaked lol. Managed to catch like 4 bait fish and sent a few down for like 20 minutes but I was freezing so I went back in.
