DIY Decorative Wooden Hair Fork | Trying Hand Engraving For the First Time

Published 2023-08-06
Trying my hand at engraving. Wouldn't say I have a gift, but it's an ok start.

Tools and Materials:
- Padauk (wood)
- Table saw/mitre saw/band saw
- Dremel/engraver tool
Sand paper (220, and 320 grit)
- Alcohol
- Satin Poly Finish

I like working with hand tools very much! That way you feel the material you work with. Yeah, that's not as quick and efficient, but things you make are unique (even if they are ment to be the same), made with your soul.

There's no way we can be disappointed with you , great job 👏

For the purple heart, you can bake it to get a nice deep purple. A torch works too but is harder to control(overheat and burn).
  • That turned out so nice!! The color is incredible and compliments your hair so well. I have one of those Dremel engraving extensions as well and was thinking how useful it'd be for you, so it was great to see you eventually use one, once you realized there was one there! :-)
  • Regarding the resawing issues around 4:00 I just switched to a new technique since I had the same problem. I use the table saw and make two resaw cuts leaving a small connector in the middle. Then use the bandsaw to separate them and plane off whatever’s left. Works good IMHO but definitely more waste.
  • Looks great! I really like the engraving work. Also, couldn't tell you were sick. You sound fine. Keep making videos! Love them every time they come out!

Very entertaining. Your videos are never boring. Keep up the good work, looking forward to your next one...
  • The finish looks cool... But, your comment about not wanting to make your piece super glossy and plastic-y made me think of shellac, and how you might enjoy experimenting with it... Especially, French Polishing. Good luck and happy wood working!

Oh I liked how that turned out! The engraving is a nice touch. I've wanted to make one of these for a while now since my plastic clips keep breaking.
  • The problem with the purpleheart is, it will in time dull its purple color to a muddy brown. That being said. Your hair fork looks awesome! I hope you get better soon!
