  • To clarify, San Marino is the oldest country by modern definition of frontiers, language and population. Not to be confused with oldest civilisation. πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜‰
  • @Khenal
"I've got the emus on my side." You explicitly do not, Australia. You lost to them. Twice, I believe. At best, you are on their side.

I remember going to a friend's house in the french countryside, he welcomed me, then proudly and affectionately pointed at the ceiling beams and said: "Those are older than the USA"

Notice the difference between "civilization" and "country". A civilization can be really old but the regime would change.
  • Fun fact: as San Marino is the oldest living country, it is also the only country who saw the empire of rome desintegrate. Thus, it has an annual celebration where it conmemorates the empire Edit 4: Egypt was invaded by the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs and the British, so it was not a country until it got indepencence from this last one on the 18th of June 1953. India was invaded by the British and it was not a country until it got indepencence on the 15th of august 1947 China was invaded by the mongols, so it stopped existing for a few decades, and the three kingdoms that were always emerging tore the country apart, being the last time this happened on the 1st of October of 1949 Iran has nothing to do with Mesopotamia or Persia, and it was ALSO invaded by the mongol empire and the British, so it was not a country until the 1st of April of 1979 Greece was whiped out by the Romans and the Ottomans, so it was not a country until it got indepencence from this last one the 3rd of February of 1830 Please, shut up, the comment was about a celebration in San Marino and it ended up being a stupid 300+ people discussion. Civilization and country are two very different concepts

Additionally, the modern Indian state has existed since 1526 AD. In 1526, Babur proclaimed the empire of Hindustan, or in English, the Indian Empire. The East India Company operated formally on the authority of the Emperor till 1830. In 1858, the House of Babur was deposed and in 1876, Queen Victoria was proclaimed Kaiser of Hindustan or Empress of India and brought back the Indian Empire officially (you can see the passports). The British territory in the Indian Empire was British India, from which in 1947 the Dominion of India was created, which UN recognised as the continuation of the Empire of India.

Oh boy, never thought about Jamaica being so recent. And I can relate to this scale, as my country being 200 years old.
  • @realhawaii5o
Following the modern definition of a nation-state, Portugal is quite old too, existing as "Portugal" since the 1100s, with a centralised-ish government. It also has the oldest border in the world that has only shifted lightly.

"You want to fight?" "Bring it, old man. I've got the emus on my side!" Only time I've ever seen two completely separate jokes with absolutely no connection in the same breath. Love it! Edit: Bro this is a terrible comment stop giving it likes. Edit2: This is my most popular comment by far and the second-most liked on the video. Are you guys stupid or has the world played a collective prank on me?
  • Thank you so much for including Jamaica! Much love from here
  • @vds4327
as an Italian I can explain: San Marino is the only Italian nation that was not unified during the course of history and remained independent (together with the Vatican), so if Italy were not unified there would be many other states to replace Italy and perhaps even older than San Marino
  • @candicoated2001
Its the fact Jamaica is only 59 years old and my Jamaican grandmother, 75 (now deceased, meaning she would be 77 now.) She essentially saw the island 17-18 years under British rule. I could only imagine what it was like. Never really got the chance to ask her much.
  • I really want a civilization based video now! We'll see Egypt, India, Greece, etc. Edit: forgive me, every country is ancient bruh. I just gave examples, you see that 'etc' there? Everyone's here giving there own countries and stuff... 😐
  • @ediosmollai8785
Some people said why was Greece not on this list well due to the simple fact that we Greeks at least our ancient ancestors were not 1 country ancient Greece was city states Greece became a unified official country in 1821 after the rebellion and driving out of the Turks but if you take into consideration Mycenae and the Greek city states then Greece would be well over 6500 years old
