I was able to meet him back stage at Alpine Valley.. when my friend and I approached Sammy ran away but Eddy stayed and talked with us for 10 solid minutes before he went on stage.. he treated us like we were friends for years.. great dude. He answered every single question we asked and laughed with us the whole time.. i was really surprised how little he was but damn what an awesome legend he was.. he even reached his hand out to shake ours before he had to go.. RIP EVH.. and thx for you time.
  • Ted Nugent was once asked what EVH sounded like playing Ted’s Byrdland and Fender Twin Reverbs. He said it sounded just like Eddie Van Halen.

Jerry Cantrell also said this about Edward playing his rig back in the 90s.

The thing is. We'll never hear new music by Ed and THAT REALLY makes me sad....

I love a story Steve Lukather told about a man walking up to Larry Carlton and telling him how good his 335 sounded and Larry set it on a stand and walked back over and asked the man; "how bout now?"

I was exclusively a drummer for over 2 decades prior to becoming a guitarist, and I realized one day that both Eddie and Alex were unique; easy to pick out of a crowd of drummers and guitarists. That may be because I was so familiar with their playing styles, but it can also be a product of being self-taught and not following the crowd. They were also tight as brothers, which explains why Alex has no interest in touring without Eddie. Eddie was one of a kind.
  • I lived in Houston about 25+ years ago and Steve Vai did a clinic I guess we’ll call it now at Guitar Center. He told one of the workers to grab him a “cheap” guitar. He plugged in, sounded like Vai. He demonstrated this exact concept for us to understand.
  • Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai: two virtuosos with their own styles, God bless them!!! ❤❤❤😊😊😊

Man to be a fly on the wall in the room that day...

I interviewed Ronnie Montrose for a zine I used to publish and I asked him about the gear he used, as his tone was always so distinct. He said he changed gear all the time and that the tone was in the player, not the gear. . .

Couldn't agree more , that's why I quit playing other people's music and started creating my own.

When a virtuoso like Vai admits to being humbled, it speaks volumes.
  • He's the second guitarist I hear saying that. Dave Gilmour said the same as Vai, and I can't agree more with them both....
