Rachel Reeves will reinstate compulsory house-building targets as part of an overhaul of Britain’s planning rules.

In her first major speech as Chancellor on Monday, she will confirm that Labour will overturn Michael Gove’s decision to water down planning targets.

The announcement will raise fears that Labour will push councils to build on green belt land to help it meet its promise of building 1.5 million new homes over the next five years.

I see the former chancellor forgot to leave a note.

remember when tories told us we had to be dependent on foreign energy AND we couldn't build more homes because of the fault of the boats! Tories working for their pockets, not the people of britain

2029. One and a half million new houses. Imagine it. Acres of concrete and tarmac, clogged country roads, developments like tumours on the edges of medieval scale towns; smug nimbys who in anger had shouted, 'NOT HERE!', planning officers who, in desperation, were forced to stick the houses in the least pleasant places, making deprived places worse; insurance claims elsewhere for flood damage because the surface water had nowhere to go; increased taxes to pay for everything. A landscape of bland £300,000 rabbit hutches, built with scant attention to local tradition and none to innovation, marching into the fields, while the farmers cheerfully took their paycheques to the bank. Welcome to ENGLAND

The migrants will be expecting a property when they get here.

What a robotic speech! Thank goodness she woke up during the questions. 25,000 new homes per month promised here. She better get building.

When it all goes wrong, they can then blame the conservatives. No consequences for Labour

With all these new houses being built they need to invest in the sewage systems 😷. I wonder who will get priority for these new homes?

Strong speech. Lets see if she delivers.

She fails to mention that the Labour party were 100% behind the Tories for at least the last 5 years. They provided no appreciable level of opposition, and in fact screamed for more expensive lockdowns ets.

If this lot can’t get it right then politics and therefore society is done for. This moment in time really is that big🤞

It's weird having adults in charge. It's going to take some getting used to.

Unsold houses are stacking up in the market and developers are not going to risk building a huge amount of new homes in this environment, the government does not set interest rates or mortgage rates either, the market does, with a little bit of short duration guidance from the BOE, the 30 year UK gilt is ticking up nicely again and if Labour set one foot out of line they are going to see the beginnings of a new sovereign debt crisis, even if they don't step out of line the crisis is building in Japan and the US anyway so we will get sucked into the vortex, the only hope is to make changes along the lines that Reform suggested to make the state smaller and this can then lead to tax cuts, this can grow prosperity, this is not going to end well given the level of experience that Reeves has or Labour's previous track history with the UK's wealth management (Brown & Gold)
  • If Labour turned around and said "I know we have the worst democratic mandate ever in our history but" I'd probably respect them more instead of pretending they have a big mandate.

more excuses to increase tax! we were repeatedly warned!
  • @MZig-rw7su
Gdp per head would be 10% higher just by removing 5 million immigrants on welfare. Housing shortage removed. Wages increase. Crime drops... She knows it but won't do anything. Stinks.

    Goodbye our beautiful countryside 😢
  • @bonnaud_dowell
It's not easy and not really that important but RR needs to improve the way she reads the autocue

Maybe, just maybe, have a strong look at the houses being built and make it mandatory to have solar panels and other smart technology to ensure healthy and green living. What about 3D printed housing and more use of natural materials to lower the CO2 cost of the homes.
