The whole band was starting families having kids. They were sick and tired of being sick and tired, and decided to clean up their act. Unfortunately the plane crash. I’m 64 partied a lot in the 70s and 80s then got completely clean and sober when I started a family. Next “Simple Man”, “The Ballad of Curtis Loew”, “Call Me the Breeze live 1975”

I read back in the day in an interview with Ronnie Van Zant, that the song written was about Gary Rossington (Prince Charming as he was called) and his numerous car wrecks. The smell is referring to death/dying/burning flesh. If you'll notice in the live concert footage from '77 when they sing this song, Ronnie's (lead singer) attention is focused on Gary Rossington at many times during the song.

The lyric, "whiskey bottle, brand new car, oak tree you're in my way" is about guitarist Gary Rossington smashing his new Ford Torino into a tree and then a house. The band was supposed to start a tour a few days later but they had to postpone it because of his injuries.

The background singers make this song special

It's really really hard to choose a favorite Lynyrd Skynard song because they never fail to deliver. All are 🔥 but, of course, favorite performance is easy for all us LS fans. The guitar solo of Freebird in Oakland is legendary. I know you saw it early on & were a little taken back. Freebird, they say, is like rolling a boulder up a hill and letting it free fall down the other side. I think you should rewatch. The piano - the guitars - I feel like you'd appreciate more now.

Musically, and message-wise, taken together, makes this one of their best songs. I mean, the guitars? Daaaang. That tone.
-
This is in my opinion their best track, the song is about guitar player Gary rossington, who ironically survived the plane crash which killed band members
-
This is my favorite LS song! I decided to get rid of "That Smell" 1/2/2015. Free and clean from heroin for 7 years and haven't looked back!
-

-
thanks man for appreciating one of the greatest bands ever, may they RIP
-
I freaking love the guitar solo In this song
-
Ronnie Van Zant wrote this song about friend and band mate Gary Rossington.
-
Gary Rossington was a lucky man to have band members who cared this much about him while he was at his most destructive.
-
This is one of my favorites from LS. Thank you
-
Lol was going to request this song to a few reactors, that hilarious just did.
-
My favorite Lynyrd Skynard song.
-
Cousin bought me Street Survivors when it came out. They never made it to where I lived on that tour. My cousin also passed a few years afterwards. So, that whole lp means a lot. Great songs, too.
-
Needle & a spoon is a good one also. It ties into this one
-
Three guitars always makes the difference.

This is one of my favorite songs. Cry for the bad man is very good to
