The province of Zeeland consists of a number of large islands in the South-West of The Netherlands. Part-2 of this film shows the more pleasant times when its inhabitants engage in all sorts of community games, more than a century ago in 1919. Popular community activities and games were haymaking, decorating horses, "ringsteken" (poking a stick through a ring while on horseback or on a horse and cart), "bolderen" (almost a cross between curling and the French "Jeu de Boules") and archery, but in a way that you have probably never seen before.
The province of Zeeland consists of a number of large islands in the South-West of The Netherlands. Part-1 of this film shows the simple and hard rural life of its inhabitants more than a century ago in 1919. At the time nearly all of them wore the traditional dress.
Characteristic are the two small golden reflectors that are worn at the side of the women's caps.
Zeeland has had a long fight with the sea. It was flooded often during many centuries until in the 1960's the Dutch government executed the "Delta plan" which involved closing-off the waters between the islands from the sea by means of large dams and huge sea locks.

It's just so amazing! It's like watching a painting of Van Gogh comes to life! All those traditional costumes, the fine laces and the wooden clogs....how wonderful restored these films are.

I marvel at the lace work all done by hand. Now I understand why my Dutch grandmother had such items in her home.
  • I would really like to thank you for your Dutch films, very poignant for me, as I had relatives from there. My last, Great uncle Peter who died in 68, always reminded us of "home". Thank you.

When I watch your Videos, I ask myself if they're the ones looking at us and not us looking at them. This is so beautiful, thank you.

A fascinating watch! We're so lucky to be able sit back, and catch a glimpse into the lives of these people from times long since past, all at our own leisure. Thank you for sharing this, it's truly a gem.

Looks like visions from an alternative time-line of human history . Just unimaginable, how much the world has changed in the last 100 years. Thanks for the upload!

Alsof het filmpje gewoon vorige week buiten op straat is gefilmd! Er leeft er geen een meer van en dat is zo'n gek idee omdat je die mensen zo volop in het leven bezig ziet.. Dank voor deze film.
  • My father born in Vijfhouzen and my mother born in Verschoten in the 1920’s both from farming families- this is wonderful to view!

So cool to see. I am currently quite into historical clothing and crafts so the bit with the bobbin lace is gold! Most of the big white headwear was also part bobbin lace. The more lace the richer you were. Those golden flaps are thinly hammered gold, true extravagance. Love seeing the pleating on the backs of the scarfs that's something you rarely see in period pictures let alone moving around. Gold. Thank you. ❤
  • Another marriage of impeccable film restoration and beautiful music. Thank you Rick.
  • More than words can say..it's amazing. Thanks for this rare historical footage...

Als die meneer (of mevrouw) die dit in 1919 filmde eens wist dat er tien of honderduizenden mensen op hun telefoontje naar zijn film aan het kijken zijn... 100 jaar later!

Absolutely amazing. These people were so much more alive than we are.. it's kind of scary in a way.. Only 100 years passed.. Sad times, but we can't give up on history, yet! Thank You for posting this, cheers.

  • when you think about it, those kids lived through so many world changes. WW1, WW2, radio, tv, internet, mobile phones, technology, even if they lived at least 80 years they would still be alive in 2000, 1919 was just 7 years after Titanic so the 8 years olds even lived through that.
  • This is wonderfull. To see how real people lived a century ago and so realistic. Living history and not something from a book. Zealand is still a beautiful province today.
  • I was transfixed. So fascinating to see this real moment in time that's so different than today. Terrific video.

Is it strange that I'm in my mid 30s.. a guy and just got teary-eyed watching this? No! Not at all. Why? Because people were united and personally involved with eachother in ways that I honestly don't see happening for us again. Especially after this psychological war we've been facing and with the social dilemma. I feel like I'm witnessing everything deteriorating and it really saddens me. These people were ALIVE and attached with themselves... its not like that now. That's why I got tears cuz, I feel like I'm living in the wrong time period cuz my heart n mind seeks the simplicity and life as seen in this video.

in such videos, I am always amazed by the thought that not a single person on the screen is already dead .. And they are resting, having fun, studying, working, loving ... And our time will pass like this, and we will leave forever ...
