How to Replace Old Damaged Decals on your Boat!

Published 2021-05-27
We're back in the garage and today I'll show you how to replace old damaged decals on your boat, including aged and cracked or split decals, old faded decals or even decals you simply want to change on your boat! We'll go step by step on using heat and various products to remove the old damaged decals from my boat's Mercury outboard motor cowling, including old stuck on glue residue, and then apply brand new vinyl decals using the wet method and talk about protecting your new decals once they're applied.

This technique will work on ANY vehicle that has decals not covered in a clear coat, including boats, trailers, RVs, jetskis and other PWC, cars and trucks

The new Mercury replacement vinyl decals were purchased from AMR Racing at amrracing.com/ - give them a shout for any decals you might need, they can customize just about anything and worked with me when the first set I ordered didn't fit quite right.

  • Hope you guys like today's boat upgrade! Don't forget to wait 24 - 48 hours after applying your decals before using your boat or applying any kind of protectants. Let me know if you have more decal applying tips :)
  • Finally got up enough courage to actually apply the new decals on my Mercury 150 XR6 and after much procrastination, I finally got it done and I can take great pride in doing this myself and it turned out to be easier than I thought it would be. The main thing for me was doing all the prep work and getting the surface prepared. Once that was done applying the decal was fairly easy. I decided to take the cowling off the motor and move it to a tabletop outside so I could move around the entire outside of the unit. Thanks again for you video on how to accomplish this. I thought I would need to have the cowl repainted, but after the prep work the luster came out so I didn't need to do this at all.
  • Great job and nice touch on the boat. That looks sooo good. !! Great camera angles for a good view of the work. Very clear.
  • Nice job Dan. Applying decals can be a frustrating adventure. I remember some of the guys at the shop applying decals , always a few choice words thrown in 😀.

Best video I have ever watched on applying outboard motor decals!! 👍

Good tip on rubber and vinyl coating. I didn't think of that damage possibility. Ordered mine today.

Great job and appreciated your humble personality!

I was wondering about this my decals are shot. I'm sold thanks!

Great job! I suggest trying pure limonene instead of Goo-Gone next time you need to remove an adhesive like this. The active ingredient of Goo-Gone is limonene, but it's diluted with petroleum oils, so it's messy and way less effective.

Was in the automotive business for many years, you might try some plastic razor blades for removing the decal glue once softened, we used wd-40, and the goo gone as well
  • What works even better for removing the old glue is using contact cleaner. I tried it and it made the job so much easier.
  • @LunkerFishing
Dan, I do not need to replace any decals but if I did this was a great video!

Hey Dan, great video! Wondering how hot your heat gun is?
  • @l3eaver
Isopropyl works well for devolving decal residue
  • @pstraussman1
Great video! How do you know if your new decals are wet application or all all of them wet application?
