Chilworth Manor: An English Jewel

Published 2020-05-22
Hidden away in the Surrey Hills, this English jewel has ancient origins dating back to William the Conqueror. Its gardens were later shaped by two impressive women; Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough in the early 18th century and Daphne, Lady Heald in the 20th century.  Today, much of the garden retains reference to the Duchess who bought the manor in 1725 and immediately doubled its size by adding a glorious, Georgian wing. Learn more about Chilworth Manor and its garden as Head Gardener, John Macrae Brown takes us on a virtual visit.

  • This garden makes me want to cry, it is so incredibly beautiful to me. I don’t think I can adequately express how stunning I think it is. Why have I not heard of it before?!

  • absolutely stunning & inspirational. Fantastic job by the Head Gardener/ Host. This was one of the best shot, edited & narrated virtual garden tours i have seen, and I have been going through a lot of them lately. This tour made me want to visit this garden and soak up the inspiration & beauty in person. Thank you for such a well crafted virtual tour!

Covid has at least given us the ability to see places like this in beautiful videos like this. They should do a video every year - please!

A garden been alive and thriving a 1000 Years. I am in tears just at the thought. Flora, Fauna I grew up in America and yearn to return to my "roots" there. People here are often just ignorant on this subject. It torments me. I cultivate a tiny garden adjacent to my home, laughable but treasured.

I have very fond memories of the house as I spent much of my childhood there. As my mum use to look after the house in the Sumners when lady Heald, had the house and Michael Kemp was the Gardener

The greatest blessing bestowed on England’s incomparable gardens is the abundance of rain.
  • @herrylaw
This is a superb garden, and as has been noted, very well narrated. I'm glad that the garden hasn't shied away from the wide use of box as some have.

In love with the wall of wisterias. The selection of the plants make the wall look like a window display of a retail store! Well kept.
