Dog experts emphasise the fact that German Shepherds are highly intelligent, and that their training needs to begin from a very young age, as they will mature very quickly. The experts compare the growth and maturity of the German Shepherd pup, to humans, in the following way:
• At 6 months of age, the dog is equivalent to a 10-year-old child.
• At 1 year of age, they are the equivalent of a 20-year-old person.
Now you do the math!!
Training should involve plenty of positive encouragement and rewards. Harsh words and punishment are usually unnecessary and can be counterproductive. German Shepherds can be trained to do almost anything – from protector, to guide dog, to the tracker, to happy family pet.

  • Best training for a Shepherd pup I've ever found was having an older, very intelligent, Pitbull/border collie mix. He was a big dog, 120 lbs, and the older dog was around 55 lbs, but our Shepherd absolutely worshiped her. It was the easiest puppy training we've ever dealt with. He was trustworthy enough to leave alone in the house while we were gone at around 11 months old, never did anything bad while we were gone, because she was there to show him the way. We lost him at the age of 4 to epilepsy. She didn't make it 2 months after he died, just gave up I think. Best two dogs anybody could ever hope for.

My aunt got me a german shepherd for my birthday. I was kind of nervous because of how active the dog was. I’m not a very active person but lately I’ve been taking 1 hour walks and actually enjoying the exercise! And i plan on going hiking with my dog when it gets warmer outside.

I adopted a 2yr old rescue German Shepard and he is an amazing dog but I am playing catch-up. He is very loving, needy and protective.
  • I rescued a 110 lb very intelligent male GSD when he was 3 years old. Also very dominant and confident in himself. I hired a speciality trainer to help me make my boy aware that us humans are not always as dumb as we look, lol. He was the best dog, I lost him a few months ago, he lives in my heart now. The loyalty of a GSD knows no bounds, those of us who are lucky enough to have had one or have one are the luckiest people!

I love my rescue Sheps. Missed training (from me) but the older dogs fall right in line with social interaction. Awesome beasts...super affectionate...very protective...great animals!
  • I have had 6 GSDs, all from Germany. My breeder goes to Germany for high level Schutzhund lines. My latest came with 10 generations of his ancestors. I started training him at 9 weeks of age, socializing him with children, contractors, parents of the kids and other dogs. When he acts properly, I say Thank you Charlie, good boy. I taught him not to chew the wrong things by teaching him to fetch his favorite toy. He loves that. He likes my company so much, the bond is strong. I agree with the tips, except I like the best breeder in my state. She has a line up for every litter, before they are born. She sells mostly to people who have bought dogs from her before.
  • GSD is just the greats all-round dog in the world. His beautiful, strong , intelligent, loyal & Brave his got all the attributes 💪🏽💪🏽💯❤❤😘

we acquired our shepard when he was 8 or 9 months old. underweight and abused, hes turned out to be the best dog ever. hes almost 11 and 100lbs. no sign of slowing down either.

I’ve had GSD’s all my life. I think these “tips” are common sense to anyone that’s ever owned a beautiful GSD!!🥰❤️
  • My dad just got us a German Shepard. He'll be turning 8 weeks old in 3 days. I'm definitely looking to start training him now as the video stated that this is the perfect age to do so. I'm sooo excited about the journey! I know that he'll be a great addition to our family! Thanks for sharing this information!
  • We got a beautiful GSD at about 17 weeks old. He was potty trained by 18 weeks just by keeping a close eye on him. It was the most amazing thing.
  • My German Shepherd pup is one and a half months old. He loves to play and socialize with others and he loves to argue with me. Your tips are really helpful and so easy with a lot of patience
  • @FMD023
They say not to punish your dog but I did with my corgi and he’s one now. Such a smart and loyal boy. As long as u are the alpha and show them love, a little tough love is ok. If you dog listens and gets excited over praises like “good boy” that’s all they need. I punish and praise.

👍 👌 I have a GSD, he is 7 years old now. Well behaved at home 🏡
  • @jakeswain3384
I loves this breed going to take mine out for a walk now thanks for the tips👍

I have a 10 month old shepherd puppy she is truly amazing absolutely beautiful and she is family. I trained her from the moment I got her and it has paid off she is so good at home she is socialised very well and she's growing into a beautiful dog. I love her to bits 😍
  • Got a Bernese Mountain Dog x German Shepherd at 9 weeks old. Have had her three days, now, and she is already going outside. We have had three accidents inside, but she's been pretty good being vocal when she wants to go outside. I started by giving her treats when she goes outside. I haven't reprimanded her for going inside, but I don't give her treats when she does. It seems to have gotten the message across well enough. I'm impressed how easily she's picking things up. I have noticed she likes chewing on everything. I grab her toy, and rile her up when she does so that she'll chew on that. She's currently in a puppy coma at my feet. lol
