Full coverage of both the Men's and Women's Max Deadlift, Event 6 of the CrossFit competition at the 2023 Rogue Invitational in Round Rock, Texas (Saturday, October 28).

In one of the least complex but most entertaining workouts of the weekend, the competitors looked to close out Saturday on a strong note, taking on an ascending series of deadlifts with a failed attempt spelling elimination from the event. To the crowd's enjoyment, this set up another lengthy showdown between Tia Toomey-Orr and Laura Horvath, as well as an incredible display of strength from Alex Gazan and Dani Speegle, who carried the workout into 18 rounds. On the men's side, Pat Vellner did more than enough to extend his lead atop the leaderboard, while Chandler Smith rebounded from a tough Event 5 with an unreal performance that vaulted him back into the podium race (and sent the Dell Diamond crowd home happy).

Gazan's lifts are very clean. Horvath impressive staying with double overhand

I love that they're testing 1RM Deadlift but this event had no business being this long lol. Make bigger jumps and/or make it possible to skip lifts if you want to

Camera management: would love to see a bigger focus on making it immersive for us viewers. Seems like there is a mismatch between close-up and overview shots. In a lot of the deadlifts we got an overview shot during the actual lifts or a close-up a few seconds into the actual lift making it hard to really feel the action. In event 5 there were a lot of close-ups in a race event that lasted around 20-30 seconds, instead of giving an overview shot so we can follow the competition. One of the clearest Crossfit memories is when Mat Fraser took the win on the run sprint event in the Games, and I think that was due to the amazing live (overview) footage angles which enabled us viewers to feel true live excitement about the race and where the competitors were relative to each live in the race. Just a suggestion 🙂

Worlds natty athletes all in one place. Nice!!!

Speegle not winning a purely strength event tells you more athletes are improving on their strength. But Gazan wow, immaculate throughout. You can tell that she could still go an additional 15lbs at least. Also I feel like Hovrath would have gotten some more had she switched to mixed grip when the weight got heavier she's spending a lot of effort in maintaining that hook grip.
