Keir Starmer is the current Leader of the Labour Party, previously working as a barrister until he became an MP in 2015.

A self-described “undersharer”, Keir takes this opportunity with Jake and Damian to open up about his childhood, his leadership style and what it’s really like to be the Leader of the Opposition. As a big football fan, Keir shares what he has learnt from watching Arsenal play and why he has developed such a love for the game.

Discussing his career as a barrister, Keir shares his difficult experiences representing people on death row. He explores the current adversarial system in politics, how it really feels to speak in parliament and how Keir would change the system.

On a more personal note, they delve deep into Keir’s childhood. He shares how although his mum struggled with Still’s disease she was continually determined and courageous. He reminds himself, “if mum can get up, I can get up”. He shares with Jake and Damian what he would do differently when facing the death of his father and what he would tell his parents if they were alive today.

In this episode they discuss decision making in leadership, when to trust others' judgement and how to shut out the noise.

the bit about his Dad really got me, i lost mine in 2008, 2 days before my birthday.

Sir Keir appears to be a truly kind person, much like the unsung heroes of England who helped build this nation through their hard work and perseverance. It would be a pleasant change to have someone like him as a leader of the UK.

i think he realizes so many things in shot time, that his very good of him. he had brought the vision of his political party back !!
  • I couldn't bear to watch it after Keir talked about leaving the room when his father died. It was too emotionally difficult. Me and my sister were in that position with our grandfather last year. I couldn't bear being in the room whilst his heartbeat continually slowed down, it was too much. So I left the room whilst my sister remained at his side. A nurse came back to tell me he passed and my heart just dropped. I couldn't return to that room, I just felt so guilty. Guilty that I wasn't strong enough to stay in the room, guilty that I couldn't to tell my grandfather I loved him one last time, and guilty I left my sister alone to watch our grandfather pass away before her eyes. I ran away, it's my worst regret. Me and my sister never talk about that, we avoid the subject like the plague. We don't talk much anymore either, and I know it's because I left her alone that time. I regret it and I've wished this entire year that I could change the past. I wish I told my grandfather I loved him everyday he was alive. I wish I was strong enough to not leave that room when he passed. I wish I was there with my sister to share her grief and shoulder the pain together. Unfortunately, I cannot bring my grandfather back to life. But my sister is still here, and this interview has given me the strength to talk to my sister once more. To apologize to her for leaving her alone in that room. To tell her every day that I love her like what I wished I could do to my grandfather if he was still alive. We only have a limited time in this world, and I want to spend as much of it as I can with my family. I don't want to have any more regrets for not telling a dying family member that I loved them more when they were still alive and conscious. Thank you for this interview, truly from the bottom of my heart, for reminding me of what's important and to give me the strength to confront my mistakes and make amends

His focus on technocracy is something I picked up about a year ago. He is the exact kinda PM I’ve been wanting since about 2014

Watched it all... I'm always suspect of politicians but that guy seems genuine. Well done.

I like Keir Starmer. He is relatable and human and much more people-oriented than those Tory robots. And he has real-life work experience and is relatively normal compared to most of the riff raff in politics.

I think voters have been waiting on seeing this side to politicians, he was honest and emotional and I hope we see more of this from him in the future Thank you chaps for this great interview always find with you Jake is that you seem to get the most out of these guests and you have grown greatly in your interview technique Keep up the great work
  • Thought this was absolutely brilliant and insightful. How many current politicians are regularly playing footy with their pals and aren't career politicians destined for the role before they're even born?
  • @tommyt.7756
Did y'all agree beforehand as to what to wear for this podcast?
  • @sheang4808
It’s crazy to think that people find this abhorrent, and boris and the tories more relatable and trustworthy! Not perfect but a far cry from what we have now.
  • @dj_notnice
If kidstarmer was an England manager he'd be gone, gone, gone
  • What an outstanding, down to earth individual. I pray he becomes PM and breaks the record for longest tenure.
  • @TheMikef94
Great interview. Keir comes across as very sincere and a genuine family man. I don't need to agree with all of his policy ideas (I don't) to recognise that. I may be naïve, but I also believe him when he says it isn't about him and his own ambition.
  • I wouldn't describe him as a leader of the "opposition". He's hardly opposed to anything Tories do. He's one of the same. But obviously it's more important to keep up appearance.
  • I wasn't too sure if I was going to watch this one but must say really enjoyed it :) keep up the great podcast :)
  • @LivegoodWilliam
personally i think he will make a brilliant prime minister. has very much InTouch
  • @mattevans8416
Great conversation. Well done to Keir for doing a long form interview like this. Struggling to find one with Rishi Sunak. How can you vote for a PM that won't put themselves out there for the voter?
  • What a great podcast. Have always said I would never vote for him, however by opening up just a bit he has changed my mind. So much of what he said i related to.
