When we started planning our house build, Sara’s Dad chatted with us about the option of him building all of our cabinets for our kitchen. We were definitely interested, but it became apparent that we could not plan that far ahead and know the size of our cabinets well enough in advance for him to have time to build them.

That’s when we thought of a creative solution.

A kitchen island.

We knew we would need the extra space in our kitchen, and we were excited to have a custom piece made by Sara's Dad for our house.

Now, 3 years later, we’re finally seeing the island come to life in our kitchen.

Follow along as our kitchen continues to come together.

And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on YouTube. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.

Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.

In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.

Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

  • What a great memory you will have of your parents every time you use the island.

Love the kitchen island. It's always good to have items made with love in your house.

Hmmmm on the island color. I guess it will all come together in the end.

That owl may like your shed but really likes the smorgasbord of chickens, rabbits and ducks. Keep them all safe while it is around. I think dad did a beautiful job on the island and the finish is awesome albeit brave.

Welcome back guys!! I missed you and only today l was thinking of making contact to see if you were ok!! Love the island bench! It’s like an upside down tree, green in the bottom and brown on top!! Your home is really coming along now. The exciting stage is finally here. You are able to set up the home how you want it. Please take some shots of the kids as they move into their rooms and how they set them up. I am so looking forward to seeing all the decor. You have a great idea with the colour palette. I must admit l am so excited for you all. Fancy all that space after being cooped up in a yurt and a caravan. You won’t know what to do with yourselves!! However then the real clean up begins outside. How are you going to get rid of all the extra bits and pieces you don’t need? Do you have rubbish collection or do you have to pay to get rid of it? Oh the joy you are going to get setting up the house and your land. By the way Congratulations on reaching this far. You so deserve all the praise you can get. You have definitely done yourselves proud. Have a pat on the back from me! Well l can now look forward to the next video as you take up residency. Take good care. Big hugs for you all. 👏🏻👏🏻🩷💜❤️🩵
  • Orange, yellow, and green ... throwback to the '60s. 😳 Whatever floats your boat!

I’m always surprised by the number of inspection that are required where you live. When we built in Scott county, TN, our only inspection was for the septic tanks. Of course that was many years ago and things may have changed, but pretty sure not many as you have.

Are you putting black tape or something on the end of the extractor fan pipe so it’s not silver by the ceiling?

An owl killed our chickens. My guess is he was interested in your coop.
