I think a lot of people just associate pollution with transport pollution and manufacturing. Two things that China exhibits. But then no one stops to think why China has major manufacturing pollution. Because it's people in the West buying all this shit we don't need. If all the manufacturing for what we consumed was produced in our own countries, we'd be living in a cloud of pollution too. But we've handily outsourced it to somewhere we can't see and to people we can then blame it on.

First, thank you for having the courage to bring these issues right out into the open. Second, as a population ecologist, I have a couple of points to add. 1. When human populations suffer rapid decline, the response is usually one of reproductive panic. People have even more children, and the population takes a swift upturn, usually replacing more than were lost to the crisis. 2. As of now, Covid-19 has killed about .005% of the world's population. A balanced human population needs to be more like half what it is now, meaning that the virus would have to remove 10,000 times the people it has so far, making the arguments about, "Oh - deaths make it better!" completely moot.

Hello Gittermary, that was a very informative video, thank you! But when you mentioned the USA and the victims of Covid-19, you failed to mention the Indigenous Nations living there. (If I have missed it, please forgive me!). Native Americans (and Indigenous people generally, I believe) have statistically been the most vulnerable race in this pandemic (proportionally, as they are only about 2 millions left). It is very sad that they are always forgotten! The Navajo nation alone has had more victims than in most US states! Please do some research there, to raise awareness. Most of them don't have running water (the water is used by mining companies Peabody for coal) and/or sent to other areas like Las Vegas as a source of energy. They have very few hospital beds and medical staff. Due to the high rate of employment, most Native Americans are among the poorest in the USA and many people have to share one small house. And some of the masks that were sent to them later were flawed! It's almost like the smallpox blankets distributed to them by the army centuries ago. You mentioned genocide, well here you have a blatant example... And also, Native Americans are also victims of horrific police brutality more than any other race in the USA. I hope you'll read my comment, because these beautiful nations exist but are constantly forgotten, and they have gone through so much too... They've been fighting the government and enraged police forces with all their might for their and ours rights to clean water #waterislife , to protect the planet and the future generations, they always support African-Americans. They should not be forgotten, ever.

My husband pointed out that during this pandemic pollution has considerably lowered just bc ppl were not going out, so clearly we can adjust our habits to help the environment, ppl just need the right mind set, Well said.
  • @Feefa99
It's literally Thanos way of thinking
  • @carnamilinga
I had the thought, that the pandemic had it's good side by showing us some major problems (medical and school systems for example), but why on earth should someone think that it's a good way to fight overpopulation? Holy cow... There needs to be A LOT of education done here and I am glad you are helping with that! Thank you and thank you for sharing important resources!
  • "no one has to die to save the world, we just have to change" BEAUTIFUL way to put it and I wish world leaders believed that too. This is an awesome video and very well put together!

Tusind tak for this amazing video Gittemary!! This topic is something I've been thinking a lot about these days, but not quite sure how to wrap my head around everything. Climate change discussions often end up kinda depressing or going in a completely scary direction with ecofasism, although many concerned about the topic (I believe) originally come from a place of hope and compassion towards others (other people suffering/nature and other species/future generations)... But you always explain things in such a convincing way with so much positivity, I am so glad to have found your channel and I am super INSPIRED!!! ❤️

One interesting thing this makes me think of is something I learned in a Spanish class about a year ago. We read an article about how the loss of indigenous and less spoken languages effects the environment. 1) Indigenous cultures have long histories weaved into their languages that promote more unity with the environment and usually practice tactics that don’t promote much consumption. 2) as people assimilate into “larger society” and lose their mother tongue in schools, they adapt to the hyperconsumption culture. PS. I’m an English major too. PSS. I’m definitely guilty of falling asleep with lights on, TV on, muting YT on my TV whilte watching and reading comments on YT on my phone 🤦🏾‍♀️

Thank you so much Gitte. You’ve definitely made me think about this subject in a new way.
  • I have watched this video six times because I am taking so many notes! Gittemary, you are so inspiring and wonderful and just a fountain of useful knowledge, thank you for all that you do!!
  • @adelegiard
Wow this was SO interesting to listen to ! Thank you for making me think about this in a new way ! I'm thinking about uploading closed captions in French in order to make this video more accessible, it's quite a time consuming task but if that's a way I can contribute I would gladly do so

You’re awesome… Thanks for shedding light on this topic
