My whole life was a lie. I'm Chinese and I can't hold chopsticks like my mom and dad… and now I just found out I can't hold a pen like the rest of the calligraphy society…

I’m 18 and have been holding my pen incorrectly my entire life. I have tried multiple times to correct it but always found my handwriting to become sloppy and as well as time crunches and exams it was difficult to correct it. Because of the way I hold my pen I have lots of pain in my wrist, fingers and even lower parts of my arm. Despite my handwriting being pretty neat despite my incorrect holding, I’m going to give this a go because I simply cannot put up with the pain anymore. Thank you for the insight. Sorry for my poor English.
  • Oh my goodness! Is holding a pen this stupid simple? You instantly relieved the uneasiness and rigidity that I experience when writing (which made me dread it). You have spectacularly captured the mechanics of pen holding. Thanks a Million, Ma'am.
  • Oh my gosh. This is like magic. As soon as I changed to this grip my hand-writing instantly improved and writing feels effortless.

This whole time I've been holding a pen like some peasant. I'll never get those years back.

in my opinion, the pen hold depends on the type of pen you're using, because the pen itself makes you hold it in such a way that you could easily slide it against the page. so if you're using a fountain pen you won't be able to press it hard against the page and your movement will begin in your forearm while if you're using a ball pen you will tend to move fingers rather than forearm
  • I came here because I had a hard time holding my s pen and this video made me understand and appreciate the button placement on the s pen. Thank you!

Hello, I'm attempting to learn spencerian handwritting and the problem I was struggling with since the beginning, was that my thumb limited my movement, but with this technique I've found that the movement is more fluent and natural. Thank you very much.
