Shot the night before the last day of the 20th Century celebrating the 40+ year run of painted SMEE IRT cars, truly the archetype NYC Subway Train. And just for old times sake, a little bit of graffiti.

Also note the incandescent lighting at Pelham Parkway. This station was on the verge of being overhauled, so the lighting remained on borrowed time. It was the last platform on the IRT to receive fluorescent lighting. After that only the Rockaways and perhaps a couple of other places, lasted a few dozen months longer. By 2010 virtually all mezzanines and odd street stairs were finally converted. In 2015 there are still a few bulbs lit up, but no public area that I am aware of is entirely lit by incandescent bulbs.

It's been a while since we had a truly snowy day like this. I miss it dearly.
  • Those incandescent lights at Pelham parkway with the snow looked beautiful. Very vintage NYC. I wish I could experience the vintage, overlooked beauty of it.

Ahh good memories. Redbirds and their predecessors from R12 to R22 were the best rides on the IRT. I miss those days. Great video!
  • Awesome video. I love seeing your old subway videos especially the late 1990s through early 2000s ones. Memories.

Great video. The 2 and 5 is where I rode on the Redbirds a lot back in the 90s and for the last time in 2000 on the 2.

The stations looked so good with the dim glow of Incandescent bulbs instead of those white flourscent lights they have now. And nowadays they are trying to make all of the stations have those hideous blinding LED lights. The system is slowly but surely loosing all its magic.

Superb videos of the R33s/R36s. I remember those cold winter days riding those cars on the Flushing line. Thanks for uploading this video. TIP: music is pleasant but overlong. Most train fans just want to see and hear the trains.

good stuff, man...time machine type of thing. Makes me remember holding grandma's hand on the way to Junction Blvd. All the bombed out trains, wild to me. thx man
  • My dad was a Conductor for NYCTA for 24 years..Worked on that 2 Train for many years..

damn actual snow. 2019-2020 winter season no real snow and climate change felt throughout the world. Hottest winter on record for many places, let's see what summer will be like.

I feel like 80s/90s was when New York reached peak grittiness, videos from that era look straight out of a Max Payne cutscene. Safer now, sure, but there's just something so beautiful in urban decay. Maybe it's just me

I could tell from the windows that these Redbirds were originally Bluebirds. The Bluebirds first went into service in 1964 on the IRT No. 7 Flushing Line for the 1964-65 World's Fair. They were finally retired in 2003 after 39 years of service.

Trainluvr outstanding! You were on "my" subway line! Very cool. The route is not as attractive as that of the #7's (which was your line). For me, the White Plains line was an integral part of my childhood. I enjoyed riding the #2 countless times with my family way back in the day. Nice catch on the sharp curve next to Simpson St. station (2:17). As a kid, I found winter especially enjoyable (and COLD!) since that was Christmas shopping time for us.

For most of my life I lived near this line so it’s cool to see how it looked back then

1982,,,huge snowstorm. Caught the last train out of 241st Street. Saw a Dyre Avenue train that was stuck 180th Street because the tracks were blocked. Freakiest things was looking out the window and seeing te Cross Bronx Expressway buried in snow.
