Saving the Mew I won from Toys "R" Us in 1999

Published 2023-05-10
This is the story of one of the very first Pokemon distribution events which took place at Toys "R" Us stores in 1999. Customers who made purchases were given a card at checkout with a chance of winning a Mew for their first generation Pokemon games. Winners would return to Toys "R" Us in the year 2000 to have Mew traded to Pokemon Red, Pokemon Blue, or Pokremon Yellow!

As the years have passed many Game Boy Pokemon games have started to lose their save data as a result of battery failure. It's inevitable that someday the Mew I received on my Pokemon Yellow will disappear as well...unless we find a way to save it! I hope that you enjoy seeing that process..

I got mine at 6 flags. They had a machine that you plopped your cart in pressed a button and it put a mew into an empty team slot. No one was there so i kept pressing the button adding Mews. I backed up my save with a Retron 5.

This is one of the rarest Mew's in existence. It speaks to the quality of Nintendo's hardware that the cartridge lasted as long as it did.

very cool! Its nice to see that there are still these original mews out there in the world.

My husband won that mew! I didn’t believe him forever, but we found this confirmation document in a box of old video game stuff
  • I'd be curious to see you generation jump to modern day if you felt like it lol. This was an unexpected but fun journey! I was expecting a whole I'm transferring from Yellow to Crystal to Emerald to (you get the idea) but this ended up way more interesting and unique, well done!

You earned that Mew man, congrats, you've got something many people can't say they have! 💙

It was a more magical time attending events and acquiring Pokémon in person.

My mother recently sold our childhood home and in the process of cleaning things out I realized my original red save file was still intact. I had the same feeling of wanting to save the Pokémon and file of my childhood and bought a similar device to do this. The file is also on multiple email servers too (just in case) haha
  • My brother used to go to a lot of Pokemon events, he had a mew that he passed down to me as a kid and some other event Pokemon for gens 2 and 3. Sadly the batteries ran out last year, so seeing this is very bittersweet I wish I dumped my/his save data. Similar story to yours actually, I had a mew on Yellow but he had a mew on Blue, the blue cartridge was stolen though 6 years ago, not because of the mew but because this acquaintance of ours we didnt know was basically taking games from under our noses to sell on ebay, they made a killing with some of them like chrono trigger and clayfighter as well.

This is awesome! Exactly why I ordered one of these too. Looking forward to backing up my Yellow and Crystal saves. I wasn’t into Pokémon back then, but I’ve got a nice glitched Mew I’d like to not lose someday. 😂
  • Great video, Andrew! I always thought it was weird how they made Mew near impossible to unlock without alternative means. Mewtwo was cool, but Mew is the real deal. Lol.
  • I can't believe you had that save file for 20+ years. I currently have two Pokemon Red cartridges and two Pokemon Yellow cartridges. I also have one cartridge of Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Silver, and Pokemon Crystal. My Gold, Silver and Crystal games don't save anymore and my two Pokemon Red cartridges, my two Pokemon Yellow cartridges and my Blue cartridges glitch whenever I start them up so I can't play those anymore either. Let's not forget I accidentally threw out my Game Boy Advance SP charger so I can't play my Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red or Leaf Green anymore either. Oh well...

LAWD! I had this mew!!! I remember I traded my Venasaur for it cuz it was the only thing I had in my party lol. My mom picked up the card after some Black Friday shopping. Biggest flex you could have in elementary school

That kid in the commercial looks likes Drake from "Drake and Josh" 1:00 It's probably him because actors often start with commercials before making it big.

That moveset infuriates me. When I got my mew through glitches, I put Fly, Psychic, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam. Good lord, that moveset was so broken.
  • I got mine and my younger brothers mew since he grew up lol. Recently saved it on a usb stick.

I used my operator to save the only shiny I ever caught. Its just a useless Unown, but hes my shiny son and I love him😭
