You need an isolated exercise like leg extensions or sissy squats to actually build your quads since the rectus femoris muscle is hardly contracted in squats, lunges or leg presses. It has to do with the muscle being attached to the hip joint. If you do leg extensions leaning backward as much as possible, you will stimulate that muscle.

Itβs an isolation movement. Of course it lacks muscle activation elsewhere. Thatβs the whole point. Isolation movements are excellent for getting extra volume in lagging muscle groups or for areas you want extra development. That tip about increasing range of motion is actually brilliant too.
