I really choked up when she said "I'm gonna make it to heaven". Voice of an angel, R.I.P. Irene.
  • @wcgcapone
I loved when Mama sighed and was like "OK, history time kids..."
  • @dvsreed
TV show was based on the movie Fame. Irene Cara played Coco and was very good in the role. Great singer and underrated actress.

Irene Cara was the first person to make me dream. In a terrible and painful childhood, there was no time for dreamin. It was all survivin. Real life tends to stay, once you get put there. Dreams are for fools. And then Irene Cara, the movie Fame, Flashdance.. those were all responsible for helping an abused little girl child dream about life beyond her pain. Now that's some fkn skills... to be pulling someone out of that.. with the gift of her voice, writing, songs. RIP Queen.
  • FameĀ was a 1980 movie about students at Fiorello LaGuardia High, also known as the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. It's a real school whose alumni include Robert De Niro, Jennifer Aniston, Liza Minnelli and Nicki Minaj. The movie was fictional, following some of the students who aspired to stardom. Irene Cara played the role of Coco Hernandez in the film and also sang this title song. The song captured the spirit of the students determined to make sure people remember their names. A very distinctive feature of this song is the background vocals that trail out the word "remember" after the line "baby, remember my name." It was Luther Vandross who came up with that part and sang it with backup singers Vivian Cherry and Vicki Sue Robinson (of "Turn The Beat Around" renown). Vandross was not yet a solo star, but was in demand as a backup vocalist. He was the contractor on this session, meaning he was in charge of the backup vocals. Dean Pitchford explained in his Songfacts interview: "He came in, listened down to the track. We got to the end of the chorus and he said, 'Back it up, back it up! Check this out.' And Irene Cara sang, 'Baby remember my name,' and he went, 'Remember, remember, remember...' and we all went, 'Oh! That's terrific!' Luther Vandross is the one who not only came up with 'remember, remember, remember...' but he also stacked the voices on top of, 'I'm going to learn how to fly high.' He did that. He made a couple of other contributions around the edges, but the 'remember' was the major one." (Songfacts.com)

I love watching your mom really getting into it and of course, Lex enjoying it, then there is Brad looking like he's watching paint dry!
  • @MP-od1zz
Sing it Momma! I loved this song. Irene Cara gone too soon. She has some great hits in the early 80's
  • The TV show was ahead of its time. Really showed the struggles of people who are aspiring singers/dancers.
  • Irene was a triple threat.. she could sing, dance and act!! the record industry destroyed her career because she took a producer to court and won because they didn't want to pay her...
  • @brentlee1043
RIP šŸ™ Irene. I am getting old watching and seeing the celebrities I grew up watching pass away.
  • @jfree336
Music is a time machine, it is amazing how it can transport you back in time. RIP Irene, fly high
  • 1980 movie -- Fame. 1982-1987 TV series -- Fame. Debbie Allen was in both. Irene Cara was only in the movie, but not the tv series. These were all SO GOOD!
  • @rodb9275
Absolutely love it when Mom joins you. She is fun. Adds a lot to your dynamic. One of my favorite channels!
  • @surlechapeau
Brad & Lex, Couch Mama gave you the scoop on the TV show the movie spawned!! This was the tv show theme song, sung by Erica Gimpel for 4 seasons and Loretta Chandler for 2 seasons.
  • I love your Mom's reaction. How can you not to Irene Cara šŸŽ†šŸŽ‡šŸ‘

ā€œFameā€, the theatrical movie and song, were both released in May, 1980. The song peaked at No. 4 that September, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and launched Caraā€™s career. Itā€™s been years since Iā€™ve seen it, but my recollection is even though it was an ensemble cast, Cara had one of the bigger roles. The TV Series which Cara was not involved in ran for two seasons on NBC (ā€˜82-ā€˜83) and returned for more seasons in syndication. (You old-timers will know what that means.) Cara charted a bunch more times, her biggest hit being ā€œFlashdanceā€¦ What a Feelingā€, which spent 14 weeks in the Top Ten, six of those at No. 1. (Iā€™m not sure how impressive that sounds with the way music charts are tabulated today, but in 1983 it was the 3rd biggest song of the year.) More notably, as co-writer and performer, Cara won the Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance, and Academy Award for Best Original Song. Cara also had big or minor hits with ā€œOut Here On My Ownā€, ā€œThe Dreamā€, ā€œWhy Meā€, and ā€œBreakdanceā€, while continuing to act on stage and screen. She won a lawsuit against record executives for withholding her royalties from Flashdance, but felt she was then blacklisted from the industry for being ā€œdifficultā€ as a result of the suit.
  • @RoninNZ
Wow, great performance. Irene Cara was looking good too.
  • @dvon1097
Flashdance(What a Feeling) is a fantastic song as well
  • @thehorrorfanx
Hi mom! Love your energy! BTW: love this song. Irene Cara was a well-rounded talent. Singer, songwriter, actress, producer - she literally did it all and did it superbly.
  • It's really difficult to not sing along. I feel your pain, Mom. šŸ™šŸ¼šŸ¤—
