Rosedown Plantation - one of the most intact plantation complexes in the southern United States 🇺🇸

Published 2024-07-06
As we make our way towards our next couple of nights stay we pause at the Rosedown plantation in Louisiana just north of Baton Rouge. The House and Garden was built on a cotton plantation where the labour was provided by up to 450 enslaved people. The garden was inspired by the owners honeymoon visit to Europe. After years of decline the property was sold by the slavers descendants to an amateur horticulturalist who began a program of restoration. Using old diaries original planting was identified and the garden returned to its appearance of the 1850`s. Today it is preserved as a State Historic Site that tells of those times when the vile practice of treating other human beings as property owned by there fellow humans was widespread in this part of the world.

Hi Ivor and Robert. A fascinating tour of this plantation, whilst it looks beautiful even idylic with the grounds against some stunning buildings its hard to get past the awful history behind such places. The only way to deal with it is that this is now history and we need to understand that and make future generations aware so that it is never repeated and we fight against those who still adopt such practices even today. Thank you for bringing it to us. Hope you are having a great weekend Best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤️
