Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said Tuesday, just before Finland was officially welcomed into NATO, that the Nordic countries membership in the alliance would “create (the) risk of a significant escalation of the conflict.”

Finland became the 31st member of the Western defence alliance on Tuesday morning, in a significant blow to Russia.

Russia and Finland share a 1,300 kilometre border and Moscow has already said it will beef up military divisions stationed in its west and northwest in response to Finland’s membership in NATO.

Russia claims it is fighting a “hybrid war” against NATO and the West, which is backing Ukraine with billions of dollars in military aid and financial support.

In St. Petersburg, known as Russia’s “northern capital,” residents disapproved of Finland joining NATO and said the Nordic country was “making problems for itself.”

“We used to consider it a brotherly country of the capitalist world, the closest to us in spirit, in relations, in mutually-beneficial economic relations. But now we will consider it as a state that is unfriendly to us,” said one resident, Nikolai.

St. Petersburg is about 150 kilometres from the Finnish border.

  • "Finland is a brotherly country to us" The most terrifying thing a Russian can say
  • @neilwu3912
"FInland is like a brother to us." Yeah, so was Ukraine.
  • You invaded Ukraine and now blamed Finland for taking caution. Ruzzia 🇷🇺🚽🧻
  • @StarReveurMA
Russia: "Finland is our brother" Finland: "We broke up long ago"
  • Russian: "We used to consider it (Finland) a brotherly country". World: "That's what you said about Ukraine".
  • These Russian civilians are absolutely insane. Look at how they treat their "Brotherly" Ukrainians.

Brotherly country? Did Finns consider Russia as their brother?
  • @H.K-tm
Well we've seen the way you treat your " brotherly " neighbours

    1. And Russia thinks Finland being a puppet state of itself? Merely defending it's own lands from nations like yours wanting to attack and not bury their corpses

"We used to consider it a brotherly country", which is why we aggressive Russians invaded it in the winter war. Very brotherly. I do not want Russia as a brother.
  • Well, if any country should be expert on the topic of "making problems for itself" I would have to think that russia would be at the top of that list.
  • "We had good neighbourly relations" That is a complete lie out of the mouth of just a common Russian man taken from the street for an interview. Your country's official statement was that Finland is forbidden from joining Nato, which doesn't sound like "good neighbourly relations", that sounds like being between a rock and a hard place, but why would Russians understand this, since it doesn't affect their day-to-day lives? Finland was more than justified to join Nato, it's not up to Russia to decide.
