I recreated Line Rider in 3D and the result feels cursed

The Mountain King track is back! This is my first time doing procedurally generated mesh terrain in Unity. It was a lot of fun to create, although the result feels a bit unsettling. My character modelling skills could use some work lol. Glad I did it though, because I can apply this technique to other concepts now.

Rough explanation of how I did it:
1. I modded a Line Rider Advanced build to output the position data of all the rigging points on the character and sled to a json file.
2. My script reads the line rider track file and converts it into 3D rect geometry.
3. By reading through the motion data of the character, I basically calculate the derivative at each point, allowing me to calculate normal and tangent vectors to the character's movement. These vectors determine the terrain mesh positions.
4. This part I'm really proud of. I created my own keyframing system for camera movement, allowing me to orbit the camera around the character and smoothly interpolate between different positions in time while tracking the character. There is also a keyframing system for terrain parameters.
5. Random raycasts from the sky little the ground with trees and rocks for extra decoration.

This feels like when an old 2D show gets revamped and turned 3D. Cool but cursed

That pov of falling down was incredible. The tunnels made it extra scary.

The next voyager mission should have a golden disc with just this video and say "You figure it out aliens, peace"
  • @Zonose
honestly it feels a lot more tense in this version especially when you can see the drop ahead of him when the music kicks up, gives that feeling of "oh my god I'm gonna die"

But are the physics still deterministic, that's the question

I honestly don't think it's cursed or cringey. It took a little bit to get used to the black ramps in the landscape but I feel like it REALLY translated really well on the Ludicrous Speed section much better than 2D. Worthwhile!!!

In the Hall of the Mountain King: The perfect classical music piece for "That escalated quickly."
  • Thank you, DoodleChaos, for all of your videos! As a music teacher, I am able to use them to engage my students while being able to talk about the music. It's like sneaking spinach into the spaghetti sauce! I teach elementary school and all of my kids K-5 love your videos! Thank you so much for your creativity, talent and willingness to share with us. My students and I look forward to seeing your next videos and I can't wait to show them this one! They will love it!

What im most impressed with is that you actually got the little guy to move exactly how he does in Line Rider

I’m a year late to this chaos and I’m now trying to figure out how nobody noticed the rider flipping in tune to the music at 1:43
  • This is absolutely sick. Though, I imagine a big factor of why it's so unsettling is the camera movement, while keyframed and smoothly interpolated, looks to be strictly locked onto the rider. At parts such as 0:24, this jumpy movement is really apparent and staggering. Usually camera movement is done with easing, which really helps the flow. Amazing work! Must've took ages.
  • Seeing things move in the background really brings home just how fast that poor rider is moving by the end. Awesome work!

“Oh, okay, this is pretty cool” *remembers the insanity of the original* “Oh no”

Cursed or not, this is a masterpiece in and of itself.
  • The recreation of a masterpiece resulted as more even better masterpiece.......

Marvelous video good sir. You're a true national hero and an idol of mine. I hope to one day obtain a mere fraction of the talent that you bestow in all that you do. Doodlers unite!
  • HE KEEPS BECOMING MORE POWERFUL! WE MUST STOP HIM BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!!

AMAZING work! Absolutely outstanding! You really get to see the speed in the last bit, because you can see rocks and stuff wizzing past – a lovely extra thing in this version that's not possible in the original from lack of context – I love ALL OF THISSSS
