This is a Lego Mindstorms EV3 guitar. It generates sounds based on 12 fret positions and 5 buttons. Sound comes from the EV3 Brick (95646) internal speaker. Fret position is measured by EV3 Ultrasonic Sensor (95652). The guitar can be used as a solo guitar, rock guitar and bass guitar with different EV3 programs. Built completely from Lego parts. Enjoy!

01:40 Smoke on the Water (Rock Guitar demo)
02:10 Walking Blues Bass Line (Bass Guitar demo)

That rock guitar sound font is so Doom. I love it.
  • My father is both a guitarist and a Lego enthusiast. Or really, just a building things enthusiast. He used to apply all the decals for me when I was too young to be interested in getting them on right. Anyway. I sent this to him. Thanks for your great content!!

Lego featured this kind of thing as an alt build in this exact Mindstorms set (it was called EL3CTRIC GUITAR), but it used the included infrared sensor for measuring frets instead of the ultrasonic sensor you had to get separately

I'm highly surprised by the accuracy of that LEGO sensor wow.
  • As a guitarist and a Lego builder, I say this is amazing! Edit: wow! 1.8k likes thanks!
  • If you make the pitch changing continuous instead of discrete you get an Otamatone! :D

This is awesome! I can't wait for the V2, where it'll have 8 strings, the full 24 frets and the ability to play chords/technical deathmetal.

Smoke on water on this guitar sounds like a boss song from an old 16 bit game lol
  • I teach robotics with the EV3 Lego sets. I am definitely going to make this as one of my projects.

I remember building one of these from nxtprograms as a small child and only now am I realizing that the ultrasonic sensor absolutely does not have to be way up at the head.

Okay I am definitely getting this this is so cool! I'm a huge LEGO fan and I can kind of play bass, this would be a lot of fun to mess around with!
  • I used to make guitars from lego, when I was a kid. Later on I learned to play guitar in my teens. I've been playing guitar for 30+ years and still love LEGO technic and guitars. This video is all about it. 👍
  • @r35.
What a brilliant idea... really impressed, I think this kind of approach could also be used for video game controllers! Thank you for Inspiring me!

I wouldn’t be surprised if he eventually manages to build a Lego Pipe Organ. 😂
