Until 1949, Palmeiras had another anthem, created shortly after the foundation of the club by italian immigrants, in times of Palestra Itália. With the remodeling of the name and shield, ordered by Getulio Vargas due the World War II, the alviverde team needed a new anthem to symbolize "new times". It was then that Antonio Sergi, an Italian by birth, but Brazilian at heart, entered Palestrine history. Conductor composer and conductor of the Italian-Brazilian orchestra, he composed the lyrics and melody of the Palmeirense anthem.

However, as he was not in the habit of writing lyrics, remaining only with the conductor and musical arrangements, he used a pseudonym Gennaro Rodrigues to sign the Palestrino anthem. This fact caused confusion for many years with fans looking for the “real” author. In addition to being a musician, Sergi was also a cardiologist graduated from Escola Paulista de Medicina and professor at the Dramatic and Musical Consultancy of São Paulo.

Lyrics in English (verbal translation)
When the imposing alviverde appears
On the lawn where the fight awaits
You know what lies ahead
That the hardness of the prelate does not take long

And Palmeiras in the heat of the match
Making loyalty the standard
You always know how to win
And show that you are indeed champion

Defense that no one passes
Race forward line
Crowd that sings and vibrates

Defense that no one passes
Race forward line
Crowd that sings and vibrates

For our entire life
Who knows how to be Brazilian
Sporting your fiber
