I worked for a pet store called "Amazon Reptiles" back in '01. We had a baby turtle enclosure up by the register filled mainly with sliders, softshells and snappers. But, there was one baby Fly River in there. I don't think we were allowed to sell it. I think, like the gator, it was a display animal. Maybe it was for sale and it was just really expensive. This was over 20 years ago. But, either way, I used to take care of one.

A good alternative species to keep for outdoor ponds year round would be temperate species of soft shell turtle.

ZooMed has 4 large fly river turtles in their facility in San Luis Obispo, along with many other endangered reptiles. Probably from customs seizures. Do hope they make an effort to breed them as they are overwhelmingly male in captivity.
