Amazing advice on being authentic and never playing to the gallery for artists by David Bowie.

“I think it’s terribly dangerous for an artist to fulfill other people’s expectations” What a brilliant human
  • "And when you don't feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you're just about in the right place to do something exciting" My favorite quote of all time.

For the last 50 years I've felt that David Bowie was one of the 3 or 4 celebrities I wish I had known personally. He screwed up parts of his life, but he was always intelligent, introspective, considerate and funny as hell. He died gracefully. I miss his voice.

This definitely applies to ALL artists. Writers, illustrators, musicians, etc. I'm an illustrator and I've noticed artists I speak to online often lose their adoration for art when they draw what's trending as opposed to what they enjoy. Many hate working in the industry too. Industry veterans give advice on how to avoid losing your spark & love for art when pursuing art as a career and a lot of it boils down to setting aside time and energy to create things just for you. I am often told that my art is "underrated" and that I should have more followers based on the quality of my work. But i dont create to appeal the masses. I create what brings me joy. If that makes me harder to find, then so be it.

I hear “be outside of your comfort zone” all the time, but you shouldn’t be drowning! David makes a great point - you need to be a LITTLE outside of the comfort zone.

Not only just a talented musician but has a fascinating way of speaking.

Every time I tell my friends or family about the art I'm creating they say "That's great! But you should really be catering to the masses. Be more marketable. Create things that people like and want to buy." Yes, that's exactly how masterpieces are made. Water down my self expression. STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF

I actually met David Bowie in the early 1980’s when he was performing in The Elephant Man during a limited engagement on Broadway. He was a real gentleman and to this date it was the best thing I’ve ever seen on Broadway. An all around talent!

"Always remember that the reason why you initially started working was that there was something inside yourself that you felt that if you could manifest it in some way, you would understand more about yourself and how you coexist with the rest of society."

Wow....Bowie was the most intelligent artist, who else could write, perform , act, paint and discuss deep meaningful subjects. Insane amount of talent all in one man....RIP David

This man was a gem of an artist and left a definite legacy in pop culture and music history.
  • Bowie was damn right, such an intelligent and inspiring man. Should still be here. Thanks for the music and films, Mr Bowie. Your legacy will stay strong.

I'm not even an artist in any way shape or form and I felt this
  • This video makes me feel warm inside. If you know a frustrated artist, band, or creative person whose feeling a bit neglected, share this video with them. Go on, you know you want to :)

So well said and it doesn't apply only to artists, but to any work or human endeavour. I wish I honored this wisdom more

This man is and always will be a genius. He knew what he was talking about. As an artist I always try to heed his words. I miss him.

Not only a gifted and talented musician but also a wonderful human being.

Listen to this 12 times in a row, and then go out and 🅲🆁🅴🅰🆃🅴!
  • "I'm singing about me and my life, and if it's relevant for other people's lives, that's alright." (John Lennon) In junior high school, I began writing songs, and it became therapy, a way to express my perspective on the human condition...and to process my own emotional reactions to it. Surprisingly, this introspective exploration of my experiences helped me to connect with others who have had similar experiences, allowing them to feel better understood, too! As Bowie noted, not pandering generates the best (and sometimes most successful) art! Side Note: My best friend...whom I can always trust to be brutally honest...once told me he hated one of my songs. After considering his input, I changed nothing! I wrote it for me.

It is clear in his pauses and his vacant gaze how truly genuine he, thriving in a world of bombast, is being. I feel blessed that the first gig I was ever at was Bowie. Best thing my father ever did for me.
