Thank you so much for this content. My homeland has such a colourful and interesting past, its a shame more people are not aware of it. Happy to be a channel supporter when you bring Welsh history to a wider audience :)

Greetings from Hungary! The welsh and hungarian history has a lot in common, especially when we talk about foreign occupation… In the 19th century, after the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-49, Emperor Franz Joseph asked of our poets (János Arany) to write a “praise-poem” about him, and he wrote one called “The bards of Wales”. The poem is a metaphor for the Habsburg rule over Hungary. In the ballad Edward I visits the newly conquered Wales and demands the bards to praise him, but every single one of them sings about his tyranny. Later the king sends 500 bards to death, but he becomes crazy beacuse of the remorse.

I didn't know until recently that Wales has more castles than anywhere else in Europe.

Woah, as a French (Brittany/Normandy) who has lived 17 years in London and visited parts of Wales I had never really grasped how great the Welsh history was, thanks to this channel I will never look at this people the same way ever again!
  • In 2014, the Cornish people were acknowledged as a ethnic group in the UK and our language of Kernewek has been making a comeback in both Schools, industry and parts of society.

1:04:00 they did NOT style themselves as princes in subservience to England. Prince is short for princep as in governor in Latin. This enraged the British and it meant king of kings for the welsh. So far this is the only mistake I have found in the entire video up to this point. Good job!
  • Diolch (thanks) for this video. It's great seeing my country discussed and it's ties to medieval Europe.

Was just playing medieval total war 2 Britannia as Wales and decided I wanted to learn more and then this popped up. Perfect timing, I appreciate all the time and effort that goes into these videos. Keep up the good work.

Tiny (possible) correction at 1:04:10 when it is stated that the use of “Prince” was a sign of a defiance because it is derived from Princeps in Latin and would connote a status above just a king of a region. Once Cymru was fully taken over, the title’s meaning was changed from “the first man” to essentially “first in line”. I could be wrong but this is the way I’ve seen the evolution of “Prince of Wales” explained before in some sources (Edited time stamp) (Second edit) I think this is also backed up by the recorded and translate word/speech starting 1:11:30

Erm, notable map error at 1:27:20 Tenby is in Pembrokeshire (SE) of Haverfordwest. Not in Glamorgan. And Carmarthen is in... Carmarthenshire (NE) of Haverford West, and certainly not Monmouthshire on the English border.
