DATING SOMEONE IN A WHEELCHAIR| Our Top Dating Tips

Publicado 2019-02-20
Kasey and Andrea started dating back in 2010. They both met back in college in Texas. Andrea had never been with anyone who had a disability or was a wheelchair user before and so the interabled dating game was completely new to her. There were quite a few interesting challenges that they both had to overcome. Today, we give a few tips for interabled dating as we talk about what we went through including Andrea’s parent’s opinion and issue they had for being in a relationship with Kasey, and how she lost friends who did not agree with her choice of dating Kasey. For Kasey, he wanted to make sure he was honest and upfront with her about his disability and adapted lifestyle but at the same time was worried all of the information would “scare” her away.

We’re Kasey & Andrea. A Minnesotan and Salvadorian husband and wife living and loving life in Minnesota, USA. We live an adaptive lifestyle that allows us to be active, independent, and live life to the fullest.

We’ve been together a total of 8 years and going into our 4th year of marriage. Through all of these years together (and with Kasey’s 28 years of living with Spina Bifida) we have learned A LOT about adaptive equipment and products, and multiple ways on how to modify things around our homes and lives.

We have traveled to different parts of North and Latin America so far and planning to adventure a lot more in the near future.
We created this blog to share with others our personal experience with living an active and independent adapted life. We’ll be sharing adaptive product and equipment reviews of what we have used in the past; posts of some of the most fun places we’ve been able to visit during our travels. Last but not least, we’ll also share content regarding Kasey’s weight loss journey and adaptive fitness and exercise ideas.

We’re extremely excited to be able to reach out AND also learn from others who are living an adaptive life to the fullest!
Here’s to some amazing Adapted Adventures!

OMG WHAT A GORGEOUS COUPLE. I work with disabled people and my clients next door neighbor asked for my phone number and said he wanted to take me to a restaurant. He's in a wheel chair and is quite attractive. I literally noticed his smile before the chair. I've been a widow since 2009. Single by choice. I'm glad I didn't settle for an able bodied man that would probably not treat me as well. Also I'm black and he's Hispanic. The first time I saw him I thought" Wow he's so attractive" it was more like I could feel that he was really sweet. He made us( my client and i) tamales twice. Silly me had no idea he was attracted to me. I almost can't wait to go. Oddly true. 🙏🙏💖💝

Lovely women, we people in wheelchair are people, lots of people talks to your company and you’re the guy in the chair .. We had feelings!!! Great women again..
  • This is amazing! I started dating a man in a wheelchair, he was in a motorcycle accident 15 years ago. He is the first man who I honestly can say I deeply connect with. Every single day he makes me smile. I love him!

I was born with spina bifida and use a wheelchair and my wife is able bodied. I am getting ready to start filming my adventures and was doing research when I came across your channel. Thanks for the inspiration!

I completely agree with everything, I also have spina bifida and before I moved out of my parents and into a college dorm, I was worried that I would not be able to find someone, or that girls would not even consider me an option since I knew I would have to be using a wheelchair to get around campus (i walk around with crutches at home). But barely 3 weeks into freshman year I found someone who I have an amazing relationship with still even after 1 and a half years. For people struggling with the anxiety of being judged, just remember that you have lived a whole life that is completely unique to anyone else, the chair or your disability doesn't represent you. When I met her, I never planned on mentioning my wheelchair unless she asked about it, I just got to know her and she got to know me and we connected right away, and once we were comfortable with talking about it, we brought up my disability and some things about it. Unfortunately there will be people that cant look past your disability, but those arent the people you wanna be spending your life with anyways so dont even worry about it. And if youre someone with spina bifida whos younger, maybe in elementary, middle, highschool I think it still applies, I've had my fair share of relationships when I was younger too. I think the important part is just to make sure that your disability is a part of you, rather than you being a part of it and to just be confident and don't be afraid to initiate conversations.

Thankyou for this. I have a first date with a guy who uses a chair so this is helpful.

Another great video. You guys are a fun loving couple! As a paraplegic at age 18 from a car accident, I wish I had access to your videos. Hold your head up and don’t look down. It takes a lot of guts to get around on four wheels.
  • My bf has spina bifida too and he’s paralyzed from the calf down he wears braces to help him walk but this video helps a lot he doesn’t let the spina bifida define him he pushes past it and still does what he love I find it attractive that he has the perseverance to push past it and do what he loves he doesn’t let it hold him back we live in different states and what brought it up was I asked him if he drives
  • @giocondakisses
I like a guy on a wheelchair, I hope we eventually start talking and go on a date, I wanna know what questions I can make and what I shouldn't so I'm watching this video
  • @okamimusha5932
I wish I found your video a year ago. Maybe it would've helped in my marriage, but I am self improving with some books. Seeing this makes me feel a little better about my situation.
  • @blake9742
It is mean for another person to criticize and find problem with a disabled person. It’s not like it is his choice to be in a wheelchair. I know you guys are strong and have each other’s back and that is priceless and amazing
  • @tardysauce1466
WOW this is amazing! You've been together for 10 years and married for 5? I have spina bifida but not in a wheelchair I walk with a limp and people judge me every single day. Just watching this video give me so much hope to find someone to be with as long as you two have been together. I am in and out of the dating game because I have spina bifida and I sit and think to myself who would want be with a guy who walks the way I do. I want to say thank you Kasey and Andrea for opening my eyes and creating confidence in me and have some hope. I hope you two continue have long and happy marriage and enjoy life together! :)

This is amazing I am a wheelchair and I agreed with a lot of what you said. And I salute you two for talking about something that not many people do or are afraid too!
  • Thank you guys for your insight. I recently reconnected with someone that I dated briefly 20 years ago and due to an injury, which occurred before I ever met him… he is wheelchair bound. I really like him and could see us together in a committed relationship in the future. I recently began taking into consideration some of the things that would need to be different for our relationship to grow… for instance, my home is not wheelchair accessible. Neither is my family members homes. We have family dinners and events about once a month and I would like to invite him to some of those events eventually. We are going to Miami for his birthday in August and I decided to research fun things for us to do while we’re there that are wheelchair accessible… these are things that I have never had to really consider being that I have not had a serious romantic relationship with anyone wheelchair bound before… but because I genuinely like him, I want to learn everything I need to know so that he knows that his disability is just something we will navigate, but isn’t a hindrance to the growth of our relationship. I appreciate all of ur tips. Thank you. Best wishes for you.
