About the album
open.spotify.com/album/2dEkjiUBO6Z2aeolcJ7sCy

The prolific MC, producer and musician Oddisee’s new album ‘The Iceberg’ is a plea for humanity to dig deeper in search of understanding and common ground. His third release in just 12 months, ‘The Iceberg’ is a distillation of stereotypical tropes in hip-hop and beyond, 12 tracks about money, sex, politics, race and religion that appear superficial until his multi-dimensional lyrics unfurl to expose the complexities of individuality and identity: how we see ourselves and how others see us. Deeply soulful, and shot through with jazz, Go-go, gospel, thick r&b and hard beats, the album is a timely, poetic statement. ‘The Iceberg’ is out now on Mello Music Group.

Lead single “Things” acts as a mission statement for the album, a deep dance groove with lightning-quick lyrics about “things” he’s going through. Says Oddisee, “"We all go through the trials & tribulations of life. Why is it we feel the need to individualize our shared experiences? If only we could see our concerns as others do, maybe they wouldn't be so serious."

Oddisee says, "I've always attempted to see polarizing issues from both sides. Being angry at the end result of a problem is the easiest thing to do. Having an understanding for why things are they way they are requires a level of sympathy I wish society possessed. If we tackle issues from the root, perhaps we as a people can be more effective in solving them. Giving context to how an officer would shoot an innocent person and showing how we're indoctrinated into our beliefs and biases could possibly inspire new methods to deal with them."

"You can raise a child in house full of love , can't keep them safe in the world full of hate"

I remember listening to this when I was in my first year of college. It actually opened my eyes to the fact that we need to be more open and give people the benefit of the doubt, even if they attack you directly. It's easy to blame someone for their actions, yet almost no one sits down and tries to figure out why someone might act like that. No one is born evil.
  • We as hip hop lovers need to do our part and ensure that this type of hip hop is shared amongst our peers and social circle. Dope song, incredible album

Can we just talk about how the Muslim man wore glasses to show how he valued his academics and then when he was getting angrier they are shown to crack and break off. Brilliant video.
  • This might be the most important piece of art/music all year. It doesn't paint a picture of right, wrong, or indifference. There's no rally cry. To me, it says to introspect. To view the world outside of your experience.

Damn. Perfect visuals for a thought-provoking track!

I was typing an essay at 5:12 A.M. for a class at 8:00 A.M. and when this came onto autoplay, I thought nothing of it. But then I started to listen to they lyrics. When I heard this song, I stopped typing, went onto Youtube, and watched the video from start to finish. This is my first time hearing anything from you and honestly, I love this. Keep the fresh vibes, real message, and truthful lyrics my guy. Now I gotta finish this stupid essay ASAP so I can watch more of your content

Oddisee is one of the most refreshing artists ive discovered last years and was fortunate to see him live this year. To bad he didnt showed up after the show for a picture. But i enjoy every album and every song he makes. This is one of my fav of The Iceberg. Cant wait for the next project.
  • There's a lot of pretty smart stuff going on here. From the parallel between crystals and human development portrayed by the visuals, to the the stories of how different people started from a similar place and grew up to become vastly different portrayed in the lyrics, to the sonic development that the song undergoes. The song opens with synth chords and closes with a complex bass line which shows growth over time. I really like the message of this song. It reminds us that although we are shaped by our experiences and grow to become different people, we are all human.
  • I didn’t understand what this song truly meant back then, but looking back at it now, after everything that’s happened, it reflects so much in so little time. Truly a masterpiece.

it's fun to look back on our life. so many phases, friends and memories that have passed. it gets harder the older you get but keep your head up.

Back here after 4 years, this deserved so much more attention.

The part of this video that resonates the most with me is that last verse and the accompanying visuals. Seeing Odd as a young man with wide-eyes full of love that gradually start to fade from the stresses of life is too real. I feel like I went through the same shit because I now have those same eyes.
