Wow, I didn't know Days was the first Kingdom Hearts game to have bottomless pit deaths. I thought that kh3 was the first with bottomless pits in Frozen Slider. (This takes Roxas falling off the tower to a whole new levelXD)

Probably the emulator you were playing on or the cartridge I know that Cartridge games don't hold up too well over time & emulators are buggy
