After learning of how Sukuna's backstory may be associated with Mara in Buddhist mythology, I went to do a little bit of research and this is what I've managed to connect thus far: Sukuna's character backstory may be largely associated with lore of Atavaka, another demon in Buddhist mythology, who has had a major encounter with Buddha. There are many depictions of Atavaka and one of them is a demon with "four arms" each wielding a different weapon which includes the vajra, trident, and a turning-wheel. Prior to becoming a demon, Atavaka was a human high official who was banished to the mountains in the "south" after committing an offence. The land he arrived at was barren but became revitalised upon his settlement which helped to improve of the livelihood of the people living there; and the people made him king. However, the people began to suffer tremendously under his authority and began to plot a mutiny by killing him. At death's door, the king vowed to revive as a demon to exact his vengeance upon the perpertrators, which eventually led to his revival as the demon, Atavaka. This could be a reference to Sukuna wiping the clans and generals back in the Heian era for their betrayal. Upon his reemergence as Atavaka, he made special arrangements with the villagers to offer him sacrifices as food. Moreover, one of his powers is the ability to make anyone's body feel like butter when they glance at him. I feel that this could point to the motif where Sukuna talks about his opponents as food and how he likes to play with them in order to pass time. More importantly, in the recent battle between Sukuna and Kusakabe, the former revealed his ability to send slashes at a glance. This brings me to a critical pivot in the lore. A child was about to be offered as sacrifice to Atavaka when Buddha stepped in to stop the sacrifice. Thus began the fateful confrontation which ultimately led to Atavaka being converted to become one of Buddha's generals after he got Buddha's answers to "a total of thirteen questions, that are usually grouped together as eight." And of course, the child survives this ordeal and eventually becomes one of Buddha's chief male disciples known as Atavaka Kumara- sharing the same first name as the demon himself. I feel that Yuji's character parallels that of Atavaka Kumara who brings people together to Buddha using the "four bases of sympathy": giving gifts, speaking with kindly words, doing kindly deeds, and treating people with equality. I also feel that this could hint at Yuji's eventual demise, possibly being eaten by Sukuna, which, is also a reference to Gege's remark about a major character being eaten by the King of Curses. This would make a nice twist to Yuji eating one of Sukuna's fingers which started it all. Also, if Gojo does head "north" to reach enlightenment and ends up reviving as a Buddha-like figure, he may make his reappearance just as Yuji is about to die and save him. And Gojo can fulfil his promise of teaching Sukuna about love; he may end up either going balls deep into his own enlightenment or killing everyone else just as he promised. Of course, please take all this with a grain of salt. My hopes of writing all this is to help others move the discussion forward in some ways. As always, thanks ABD for the awesome breakdown! edited: Watching other reviewers, I am somehow convinced now that Sukuna will die by Yuji's hands instead of being saved by Gojo as I suggested above. I feel that Gojo will play an enormous role in saving Megumi. Megumi is pretty much Sukuna at this point as "soul is the body, and the body is the soul" so Gojo teaching about love could be giving Megumi the will to live again and fight with his friends. Perhaps, it may be a plot device that kills two birds with one stone. It will also be a nice development to the rivalry between the Gojo and Zenin clan that has existed for a long time. I heard a theory a while ago that says Imagine if the narrator is miwa and everything we saw from the beginning until now is her telling the story of how Japan got wiped out and all her friends died to kill sukuna to her grandchildren 💀💀 ( Kinda started to believe it now )

There is a lot more stuff out in the world to explore. If Gege truly stop writing this Manga, I hope he has it in him to write about this world still. It's fascinating.
