I'm going back to flip-phone. Social media and texting are destroying my life. There's a world going on. Fishing, camping, golfing, skiing, and numerous activities to do in instead

I really miss the act of slamming a flip phone shut when a call ticks me off. LOL

I did the switch! Trying to get better at just knowing streets by memory, but I also just bought a $50 gps system for my car (they're pretty nice nowadays) and for anything else I can either use my laptop or paper and pen for. Sometimes the "losses" I've encountered after downgrading are actually gains. There is freedom in not having everything at your finger tips actually. You don't feel slave to it.

I'm 26 and I did this for 3 years (1 year where I had no phone at all) and sadly got convinced to getting a smartphone as half my family live across the world and said they missed me! But otherwise there's literally no negative things to be said about it. I took part in conversations with people more, read all of the time, had less time to compare, and more time to just be with my self and thoughts...plus physical tickets for everything and asking people for directions are fun! The world becomes more vibrant. Glad to see someone else enjoying this different way of life too! Books to read on embracing the silence and slower life: - Silence by Erling Kagge - A book of Silence by Sara Maitland - Silence: The Power of Quiet in a World Full of Noise - Exhausted: An A–Z for the Weary - The Art of Rest: How to Find Respite in the Modern Age

Just a note on banking. If you're connected to wifi there's no need to put your sim into your smartphone ...... Great videos 👍🏻

Excellent video. Thank you! I'm very tempted to ditch my Apple, as it's just too easy to go on it for one thing, and then find I've spent 3hrs on YouTube, and it's 1am! Yes, a dumb phone is way less convenient, but the undeniable truth is that modern convenience comes with seriously unhealthy consequences. Plus a flip phone is still the coolest way to take a call. Beam me up, Scotty 😁

I’ve been using a flip phone on and off for the past 15 years. Saving grace for me is, I have an iPod touch 7 and I can use that for my music, YouTube, maps, FaceTime. I also have an Asus Zen laptop with a great printer to print out any tickets etc. I need. I simply use my flip for calls and a few quick texts. I pay $30 for unlimited talk and text. And my iPod was $200 to still have the Apple experience without paying crazy money for a new iPhone plus the network charge. People think I’m weird for having an extra device but it works fine for my needs.

I love your insights! And at the same time it‘s funny, because you basically described how we all lived without smartphones 15 years ago. We were capable then, so we are capable now!! I tend to forget that so thanks for the reminder!! Love from Germany ♥️
  • I won't FREELY go back to S.Phones. But the day that it becomes 100% life is now on that thing. I am not going back to it. I have 107+ books that was just on the shelf not being read because I was addicted to that thing. Things are better for me now that I made that switch.

I’ve also kicked off 2024 with a flip phone. So far so good. I got lost once but my friend’s phone gps didn’t work either. So we drove around until we found a street we were familiar with, but it ended up fine! It feels very freeing to leave the house with a flip phone in your pocket. Look forward to more updates.

just purchased a flip phone, inspired by your videos, and I'm sooo excited to be untethered from my iPhone. I will still keep my iPhone but use it only on wifi and as a kind of secondary device. yay!
  • @joperez8003
love this. just doing my research about transitioning to a dumb phone. i feel like smart phones encourage impulsivity because as you say, everything is very convenient, and i'm looking forward to slowing things down!

I am fairly convinced I will get a basic flip phone. My intention is to use it when out and about but keep my old smart phone basically as a music player when I am at home or on a long commute, but also to use it occasionally at home through WiFi to do banking and catch up on emails and Messenger. In effect the smart phone will become my tablet, but it won't come along and distract me when out on hikes or with friends.

Typing this on my flip phone rn! I have a cats22 flip and all I need on here is Uber and Spotify, I have no social media on here and I've been loving it, it's also nice to just close it and put it away
  • @JodieRogers
So interesting hearing all of the different things that have been impacted/ you've had to think about since switching. It's definitely making me think about just how reliant I am on technology in general, even outside of social media use!
  • @belle2154
I have used a flip phone since 2020. Love it
  • You don't know how useful your video has been for me!! Thank you so much for opening up, for showing us all the benefits of 'being smart' instead of letting the phone doing everything for you. The part where you described the process of music playing, I enjoyed it and it led me to a profound thought of "what happened to the times when it was us who had to be involved in more mental processes and didn't depend on technology" this really made me think how much our brains have become lazy. I know others might not have paid attention to that specific part of your explanation, or thought it was too much work, but that's precisely the point, in my case I loved to think about having to manually do things again! And you're totally right, sometimes we rely on text bc we want to avoid direct human contact, but it's really necessary to demonstrate interest to our loved ones and make the most out of our time on this planet!! God bless you, amazing reflection!!!

im still living in the Compact Disc era too, i never left it, and im becoming more aware of how odd it is, when i give a burned disc to coworkers for music fun and then they say 'oh i gotta see if my car has a cd player cause i dont have one' lol its weird
  • @luukje
really happy to see someone talk about the banking aspect. still figuring out my preferences. looking really forward to getting a dumbphone!
