  • This video is a remake of my old(er) colonialism video. This video does NOT seek to glorify, justify or advance colonialism or colonialist principles/worldviews. It is solely meant as historical documentation. Any hateful comments will be deleted. I also feel like I need to point something out about how to read the map If a nation simply claims a land, then it is shown in the palest color. If a country claims some land, those boundaries are recognized 'internationally' and it is treated as a province rather than a claim, but the native peoples do not recognize that claim/have not ceded that land/have not been subdued, then the region will be shown with colored borders. That means that the European nation in question considers that her land and that claim is recognized in a strictly legal sense, but is not actually colonized (or, in the case of Canada and the US, ceded). The reason this is important is because we often treat tribal lands as completely occupied, rather than simply claimed.

Great video, i haven't seen a video yet that included the ones like malta, courland and klein venedig.
  • @davidbrasset5895
Great work, thanks for uploading this. However the video tells the history of European colonialism between the 15th and 20th centuries, not the history of colonialism since the dawn of times. Colonizations happened long before the Renaissance in Europe. I would recommend to change the title as it is slightly missleading (something such as 'History of European Colonial Empires').

does pink show commonwealth members regardless of if they have the British monarch as their own or not? In that case, Cyprus should be coloured as wel. Other than that, great video!
  • @kaastermdk
I think you could also have included Chile and Argentina (as for the Desert Campaigns), China, or even the Ottoman Empire. Other than that, this was a very complete video.

Great Video, very interesting to see colonialism unfold on a world scale!
  • Really well done. But I wish you would have put the viceroyalties of Spain and crown colonies of britian with responsible government in the colonies with large autonomy section
  • @MilesianPaul
you showed ireland being partially free in 1611 when it was only until 1607, also you didnt list the caucusus rebels as enemies of colonization
  • @mintviper5213
You kinda forgot the ancient Greek and Carthaginian colonies, probably a lot more pre-1400s as well
  • @adge5182
Spain and Portugal have no colonies today, i dont think they should be levelled as if they have them. Still, pretty good video!
  • @talonyte9050
Technically, Denmark had the first colonial empire starting around the year 1000. Starting with colonizing Iceland, then Greenland, then Vinland (Canada)
  • @MrThiagist
Missing pre 1400 and colors were confusing, like us x france and spain x portugal.
  • The Castilians began the conquest of the Canary Islands in 1402. Si pones la conquista de las Açores y Madeira, o Cabo Verde, deberías poner las Islas Canarias.

I know the maker probably isn't implying this but the common wealth of nations isn't comparable to the French Afrique. The French Afrique is basically France's network of vassal states while the common wealth is basically Britain creating a smaller UN. Countries don't join the French Afrique willingly while countries like rwanda have joint the common wealth of nations of their own accord.
