Mere Rashke Qamar This Urdu ghazal was penned by Pakistani poet Fana Buland Shehri and performed as a qawwali by the great Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan 1. Mere rashk-e-qamar tu ne pehli nazar, jab nazar se milaai maza aa gaya O my envy of the moon, when your eyes first met mine, I was overjoyed 2. Barq si gir gaii kaam hi kar gaii, aag aisi lagaaii maza aa gaya Lightning struck and destroyed me, you ignited such a fire that it made me ecstatic 3. Jaam mein ghol kar husn ki mastiyaan, chandni muskuraaii maza aa gaya Mixing beauty's mischief into my drink, the moonlight smiled-how enjoyable! 4. Chaand ke saaey mein ae mere saaqiya, tu ne aisi pilaaii mazaa aa gaya In the moon's shadow, O my cup-bearer, you made me drink such a wine that I was ecstatic 5. Nasha sheeshe mein angraaii lene laga, bazm-e-rindaan mein saagar khanakne lage Intoxication spread through the bottle, and goblets clinked in the party of debauchees 6. Maikade pe barasne lagiin mastiyaan, jab ghata ghir ke chaaii maza aa gaya Mischief descended upon the tavern, and when the storm clouds poured down, I was overjoyed 7. I am a hindu by birth. But I am a blind follower of this all time best singer. I have a collection of a good number of CD/ DVD of this legend.

Back in 1996 in Dubai, while working on the Sheikh Zayed Road project, a senior PM from the UK asked me about Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He told me, Nusrat Fateh’s voice was magical. The PM was white, and for him to appreciate Ustaad Nusrat was nice. talent has no colour, race or religion. Hats off to his talent. There won’t be another one like him.
