10 Days of hot hard work to restore this Art Deco Sofa

Published 2024-02-11
This project was a challenge!!
Welcome to the longest video edit and biggest upload I've created.

Everyday that I wake up I'm sooo freakn thankful I get to do this. Restoring vintage furniture and bringing clients ideas to life all the while living and playing in New Zealand is a dream.
Doing it from my home in Turangi is the icing on the cake.

This restoration took alot out of me. It was in pretty bad shape, the deeper I went the more problems I found and needed to rectify.
It was hot and nearly xmas, so my motivation and energy was also tested.
But here we are ..... DONE ....
Check it out and don't hesitate to let me know what you think.

  • I’m an interior designer and have had many projects done by upholders over the years, sometimes re styling when appropriate. Quality work like yours includes new foam and Dacron as well as fabric and your magic on putting it all together for another go at 15 to 20 years of life. I find that reupholstering costs pretty close to 80% of the cost of a comparable replacement, but often the quality of construction is not as good as the original. Choosing to give this Art Deco love seat a new life would definitely be something I would suggest doing if a client doubted the value in doing so. That old expression always holds true “no one ever regrets buying quality”.

Looks great. I would have chosen a deco inspired fabric if it were mine, but you did a fabulous job on it.

Never thought I'd watch a 40 minute video of a guy reupholstering a couch but I enjoyed it! Great work man. Liked and subscribed! 👊

You had me at “that’s 12 inches” 😂 new subscriber here!
  • It rolled out of the shop looking fabulous. It made me think of Lauren Bacall, Fred Astaire, and Dick Powell. What a statement!

This was a superb save of the old sofa. Thank you,

Subscribed! Cheers youtube algorithm for finally coming through with the goods. Music choice in this vid absolutely top tier, the vibes are immaculate, fascinating project!
  • Foam was popular 30/ 40 years ago it doesn’t age well and can go dusty and develops a smell , patience is so important when stripping down a frame . Screws should be used to attach the base , it’s a pleasure to see your beautiful workmanship
  • You are part architect, part artist, part engineer, part tailor, and your work is impressive. I wish i had watched this before i tried to reupholster a chair! It was a fail, miserably, but when i feelbrave enough again ill review this video....for which i thank you!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Things were made to last. Unlike today we’re lucky it lasts a year! Can you imagine everything that piece has gone through in it’s life.😊

My grandma had a full sized sofa just like this one . She bought it new in the 30’s. It was a dark red velvet material. I remember how heavy that sucker was.
  • i was in the boat that i would have chosen a different fabric, but then i heard you say it was for a client and i understand haha. i was a bit confused first seeing the upholstery, i thought maybe you were fitting the pattern until i saw you start officially securing it down. you did a good job on it all, not a lot of people out here now with slower style reno videos either !

I love art deco. So elegant and sophisticated, but oh so modern. I've never seen how you attached the arms before. Way better than the original way.
  • Wow, that looks so lovely! You’ve given it a new lease of life and I bet your client loved it. Fantastic job ❤🇬🇧

Kind of memory lane for me, did the same job for more than 50 years and it so nice to watch to whole process. You did a amazing job with this sofa and must say my hands where shaking to get again a project of my own....but i am retired and my hands are a bit of a problem. But loved your video very much ! I love watching a talented craftsperson work, thank you for this! And the soundtrack is such a treat. Give that dog a dog biscuit from me! Nice work on that sofa, old furniture has a life of it's own.
  • @RussellEaling
Stripping is the worst, just when you think you've found every last tack or staple, oh look there is another one. Hat's off, that was one hell of a transformation.
  • @rebeccac2867
This was such a joy to watch..thanks for filming and sharing!
  • I've just added you to my list of subscriptions to furniture restoration channels. Very nice work. And I like your music too.
