The Great Baton Rouge Flood of 2016 as the water rose

Published 2018-02-14
This is the view from my front porch looking towards my street on the morning the flood began. The people to the east or left in this video started taking water in their homes around midnight. My wife and I had just moved in to our just completely renovated home several days prior, and were so busy, we didn't think much of the fact it had been raining torrentially for several days. We received over 24 inches or rain, at times falling at a rate of 2-3 inches per hour. The man seen at the end of the video was indicating how far the water was inside his home. I was using my truck to gauge how fast the water was rising and if we should be panicking. You can see emergency services and boats preparing to launch for rescues. At this point we had no idea how bad it was going to get. As each hour went by, the trickle of people passing in front of us, turned into hundreds of people leaving their homes behind and carrying what they could. By the grace of God our home did not flood inside, although the water reached to within an inch of going in the front and back doors. My neighbors house to the left took about an inch or two inside, my neighbor to the right several inches in his garage only. The homes behind my house, several feet inside. Our home as it turned out, sits just a little bit higher than everyone else's. Homes a quarter mile to the east (left) and north had water up to their roofs. Homes to the west (right) and south had 2 to 3 feet.
