You can recover from meteor smashes in Melee and 64 too. It's just a matter of damage and if you can cancel out of it. Some meteor smashes you can, some you can't, same thing in Brawl. By the way, most deaths in Melee are caused by back and foward aerials than anything else. Even meteor smashes.
