In honor of Arbor Day, Friday, April 28th, IFA will host Reciprocity: Singing for Indy’s Urban Forests to help showcase our Forests for Indy urban forest preservation work. The event will be held at Garfield Park on Indy’s south side with community choir Song Squad Indianapolis and will feature local composer and song leader Pam Blevins Hinkle teaching, in her dynamic call and response style, her original song Reciprocity honoring the bond between humans and trees. This is not an invitation to a choir performance, but rather, an interactive choral experience. Reciprocity: Singing for Indy’s Urban Forests is a first-of-its-kind celebration of our connection to our city’s urban forests and natural areas. Pam will teach Reciprocity on-the-spot, beginning promptly at 6 pm, weaving our voices into an instant community choir.

As you know, our urban forests are crucial for the health and well-being of our city, serving as vital green infrastructure and providing multiple benefits to residents and the natural environment. The majority of Indy’s urban forests are held by private landowners making outreach and public education key factors in our Forests For Indy campaign. The stressors to our environment are building and so should we be building…our alliances, our awareness, our connections with our forests and with each other.

We are seeking to engage every voice to promote awareness about the importance of Indianapolis’ urban forests. On Arbor Day we invite you to join us in raising our collective voices in song, in acknowledgement and reciprocity with our urban forests.

No musical or choral experience is needed. All voices are welcome.

This free event will also serve as one of Indianapolis’ annual Free Tree Giveaway sites.

Swamp white oak seedlings, provided by Indy’s Arbor Day corporate partner AES, will be distributed free of charge and can be picked up anytime between 4pm and 7pm.
