My mother was from Detroit so I spent many summers there. We lived just south of Buffalo NY so it wasn't far if we drove through Ontario. We call that style of hot dogs, Texas Hots, in Western New York. The diners are usually owned by Greeks or descendants thereof. An army buddy of mine from Muskegon referred to that style as "Greek hots". I left the Buffalo area in 1974.
  • I always get one at Lafayette Coney then go nextdoor to American for the second one. And that's also the order Al should have shot this video in well. It's how any genuine Detroitier preforms this tradition. No one worth their salt starts with American! Lafayette best Chili. American best juicy hotdog snap.

the irony is a coney styled hotdog in Montreal is called Une Michigane
  • Outstanding food, they may not know but their greek chili is the same as Cincinnati chili & is hugely popular, I live in N. Kentucky & we have it here & in S. Indiana, there is 62 mile loop interstate( I-275) that circles SW Ohio, N. Kentucky, S. Indiana & there are appx. 300 chili parlors in/near that loop, plus greek diners that serve it, almost all are owned by Greeks, Macedonians, & 1 big chain by Jordanians. If I am out of town & want great food, large portions at reasonable prices I just open the front door & holler do you have Greek salads ?, if anwer is yes you are at a Greek diner 99% of the time so that is the place to eat

They're great. Even though I prefer my hot dogs with only mustard on them I still say Lafayette & American are the best places to get a Coney Island hot dog. They have that distinct snap to them when you bite into it. I'm told Lafayette has the better chili and they narrowly edge out American overall so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that one. Most Coney Islands in the Metro Detroit area are good, several are great, these are the best.

CONEY ISLAND IN NYC IS A NEIGHBORHOOD WITH AN AMUSEMENT PARK, AND THEY SELL MORE VARIETIES OF FOOD, OTHER THAN CHILI DOGS. THE CONEY ISLAND IN DETROT IS JUST 1 AREA IN THEIR DOWNTOWN PART. 😂
