Beginner To Advanced Gallop Rhythms

Learn the technique and theory behind this essential metal rhythm guitar skill. This comprehensive video will be your guide from traditional gallop and reverse gallop rhythms into more advanced concepts. Featuring song examples for each rhythm you’ll be able to internalize each one and start churning out rapid fire and precise riffage in no time!

Tuning Notes:
For the first part of the video I play all riffs in standard tuning. Low to High: E A D G B E
For the advanced rhythms starting at about the ten minute mark I’m in Drop D tuning. Detune the Low E string to D. So low to high is now D A D G B E.
*Further notes:
‘Raining Blood’ is played by Slayer half a step down. From low to high: Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb. I kept it in standard for this video for ease of demonstration.
‘Blooddrunk’ by Children of Bodom is performed on the album in Drop C. So drop the low E to a D and then drop all strings another whole step. So if you want to play to the album it would be from low to high: C G C F A D. I kept it in drop D for this video for ease of demonstration.
‘Ashes of the Wake’ is performed on the album in Drop D.

This was a killer lesson! Never knew you could add it to triplets like you did at the end

I was looking for this! Great lesson! Thank you so much!
  • Excellent lesson. A lot of people seem to mix up triplets and gallops. Great breakdown to clarify. Loved the inclusion of the advanced section with the combined triplet gallops. I'm pretty sure that Carcass and Suffocation have used that variation quite a bit.
