That's something a lot of people don't seem to understand. Things like Bar Rescue requires a two-story sort of thing when it comes to these 'exposed' bullshit, but everyone is ready to vilify the show runners (John in this case) because how dare he change their bar, make them do work, and give them an updated look that lets them actually perform and bring in people according to the interests of the area around him. And also people need to realize that reality TV is... not truly reality.

Imagine going back in time and explaining to your ancestors that you'd be spending your time watching a stranger on the internet react to a robot reading an article written by AI. What a time to be alive lol

A family friend of mine owned a bar that was featured on Bar Rescue 10 years ago, yeah it's still open with the rebrand, but they weren't anywhere near the debt the show said they were in, in fact the bar was making money (not a lot, it was still a dive bar, but there were definitely other bars in the same area with worse atmosphere and cleanliness, but my friend had a good story about how the bar "got so bad", and the show reached out to HIM), and they had passed a health inspection with an A two months before the show came. Once production got there, they said the bar wasn’t allowed to close the door to the back alley at night for a week (I saw that this happened for myself, I lived nearby and that door was shut every night except for the 2 weeks production was there), and towards the end of the shoot schedule, they finally were able to get video of mice under the stove for Jon to yell about calling them rats, and that plus the training and a bit of "marriage rescue" style talking between my friend and his co-owner, that was the whole show. Do I think that every bar on the show is like my friend's, generally doing well for a dive bar, good reviews, low debt, decently clean? Absolutely not. Some of those bars are probably just as bad as they seem if not worse, but given the number of episodes they have to do, I really don't think every bar is in the trouble Bar Rescue makes it seem like they're in, or actually goes through the official application for help.
