A Beethoven's 9th Like You Have Never Seen Or Heard Before.

Conducted by Sir Georg Solti. If you don't have tears in your eyes at the end of this gripping performance, I'll give you your money back. BBC Proms 1986.

When musicians know they are making something very special, it shows in their faces. What these musicians are showing in this great performance is unmistakeable.

The performance is absolutely thrilling, particularly the magnificent choir and Maestro Solti's exciting tempi. I am generally not a Solti fan, but when he was good he was very, very good! Unfortunately, the recorded sound is so distorted and overloaded that it takes away ultimate enjoyment.

Glorious music that we all love and obviously a splendid performance by fabulous musicians….. pity that the sound quality is so woefully, yes I know it’s from 1986 but when first performed and broadcast it wouldn’t have had fuzz & crackle throughout. It’s also a pity that the name of the orchestra and soloists wasn’t deemed important enough to even include in the notes. I got to the end of the 3rd movement before being chased away by all the fuzz & static. ☹️

Thwarts no doubting the quality of the performance, but the level of audio distortion on peaks throughout makes this a painful experience. I’m quite certain it didn’t leave the BBC in this state.

The 9th like you never heard it before, yeah distorted

Jesse Norman's gorgeous voice was a little over the top, drowning out the other soloists.
  • Too bright in effect for me! Interesting at first, but then exhausting. Sorry, Georg.
