you're not ready for this balisong! unboxing and first impressions of the Nakiri by B.A. Balis

back in December I got in on this pre-order for a brand new balisong design by BA Balis. it was touted to have a revolutionary weight system that did not require you to take part the handles. that sounded cool but what I was really attracted to was the blade design and how it was modeled after the Japanese vegetable knife the nakiri. I really thought the handles looked cool as well as the blade not having a point so that I didn't have to worry about it stabbing me or the knife getting tipped. after months of waiting I finally got to chat with BA on what I wanted the mod work to be. I really wanted it to incorporate the pattern work that I have tattooed on me as well as be a call out to my pink sparkle Abasi Space T guitar. I also thought it would be cool to have a pig and rooster lasered on the bottoms of the handles which is a reference to a pig and rooster that I have on the top sides of my feet. for those of you that are curious sailors would get a pig and rooster tattooed on their feet as a superstition to stay safe at sea and not drowned if their ship went down. in sailor lore pigs and roosters were often the only survivors of shipwrecks because they were kept in wooden boxes. anyways I'm not a sailor I just thought that sounded cool and I'm afraid of drowning. back to the knife overall I'm very impressed with this I like the heavier weights in the handles and need to play with it some more to see if it's truly my preference or just my first impression. overall I'm very impressed with this knife and I'm looking forward to it being my main flipper which was the point when I bought it.

  • 8:18 so in regards to the sharpness! I chatted with Blake and he said he sharpened this at 35 degrees per side, which is a pretty high degree compared to most other Balis that usually are sharpened to ~25 degrees (MachineWise does 27.5 and the Gaboon is at 22 degrees.) This was to make the blade still capable of cutting without being able to take your finger off! So because of this higher degree angle a paper cut test isn't really fair because it's not going to be slicey, which is what a paper cut test would typically show off. So this is technically sharp just not slicey.

I would love to see a review of that. I always thought that thing looked cool, but this video further solidified my interest in it. We need some awesome b roll of this guy! Great vid Jon

And a close up on the blade would be nice! Thx for sharing this unboxing with us (even though it's not my Naki
