What's Wrong With You? How To Answer As A Disabled Person

Published 2024-06-15
Visibly disabled people are often asked intrusive questions by strangers, like "what's wrong with you?" and "what happened to you?"

But we deserve privacy and not to be asked personal, and potentially traumatic, questions about our medical information.

I've been working on a reply that I'm comfortable with and have come up with "I don't share my personal medical details with people I don't know." I hope this helps those who are finding it difficult to know what to say.

‘What’s wrong with you’ is such an insensitive way to ask your disability. I just ask it back to the person who asked. 🤣 I’d much rather someone asked my disability politely so I can be an advocate and spread awareness. 🙌
