Lyrics:
Hello Dan, it's Joe here
I hope you're keeping well
It's the 21st of December
And now they're ringing the last bells
If I get good behaviour
I'll be out of here by July
Won't you kiss my kids on Christmas Day?
Please don't let 'em cry for me

I guess the brothers are driving down from Queensland
And Stella's flying in from the coast
They say it's gonna be a hundred degrees, even more maybe
But that won't stop the roast
Who's gonna make the gravy now?
I bet it won't taste the same
Just add flour, salt, a little red wine
And don't forget a dollop of tomato sauce
For sweetness and that extra tang

And give my love to Angus, and to Frank and Dolly
Tell 'em all I'm sorry, I screwed up this time
And look after Rita, I'll be thinking of her
Early Christmas morning when I'm standing in line

I hear Mary's got a new boyfriend
I hope he can hold his own
Do you remember the last one? What was his name again?
Ahh, just a little too much cologne
And Roger, you know I'm even gonna miss Roger
'Cause there's sure as hell no one in here I want to fight

Oh, praise the Baby Jesus, have a Merry Christmas
I'm really gonna miss it, all the treasure and the trash
And later in the evening, I can just imagine
You'll put on Junior Murvin and push the tables back

And you'll dance with Rita, I know you really like her
Just don't hold her too close
Oh, brother, please don't stab me in the back
I didn't mean to say that, it's just my mind it plays up
Multiplies each matter, turns imagination into fact

You know I love her badly, she's the one to save me
I'm gonna make some gravy, I'm gonna taste the fat
Ahh, tell her that I'm sorry, yeah, I love her badly
Tell 'em all I'm sorry, and kiss the sleepy children for me
You know one of these days, I'll be making gravy
I'll be making plenty, I'm gonna pay 'em all back

  • In Australia, it’s actually a legal requirement to listen to this every year on December 21.

Well darlings. It's the 21st of December in the UK. I lived in Brisbane for five years and this song came home with me. 🧑‍🎄
  • Thank you PK for this song. We played it at my sons funeral. One of Dean’s favourites. A car accident took him on 18/12/20..7 days before Christmas and 10days before his 26th birthday.. I will forever play it in his honour, especially in December 💙

It’s the 21st of December and once again I find myself back here. Happy Gravy Day everyone, thoughts and prayers go out to all those folk separated from loved ones this Christmas Day. Here’s hoping for a better 2022.
  • @WeMuckAround
Happy Gravy Day one and all. As a Brit with little connection to the land of Oz, this is an entirely adopted celebration for me, but I always try to spread a little PK cheer every Christmas by sharing this absolute musical masterpiece with family and friends when I get the chance. Hope 2024 is a good’un for all who read this 🎄
  • Hope everyone has a great Gravy Day. Merry Christmas to all. Thank you Paul Kelly for such a timeless classic song
  • I know it's weird to say but this is and will always be my favourite 'Christmas song' . I don't live in Australia anymore, and it just makes me homesick, in a good way. I think only another Aussie would understand the very aussie-ness of this song and the feelings it evokes. ..a little dollop of tomato sauce
  • @relwalretep
The only Australian Christmas tune worth anything. Thanks, Mr Kelly.
  • @sam8192
Merry Christmas 2023 to all. Like many others, I'll be having a worrisome Christmas, but this song for sure gives the most important thing, the determination to move forward.

Reminds me of calling my family from prison on all those Christmas days spent missing them, escaping for 6 mins hearing everyone having fun and being merry. Beautiful song.

  • @18155456
21st of December today folks. And this year in Australia we can actually see our families freely after a very long three pandemic years. Merry Christmas everyone
  • One of the most under rated musicians we have produced. His voice so distinctive and lyrics
