Sleeping Bear Dunes climb. 2 min down, 30 min up. $3,000 if you don’t make it.

Published 2021-07-20
We camp and fish near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore all the time, but never made it to the park. Sleeping Bear Dunes is a national park located northwest on Lake Michigan, in the state of Michigan. The dune is 450 feet tall and very, very, very steep, which I learned by experience.

I was looking for the big dune to climb and I was two miles off and ended up climbing a smaller one where most tourists seem to go. I asked the ranger if there was a closer one to climb and she didn’t know the one I saw on Google map.

After the family friendly dunes, I went searching for the more difficult climb.

It was harder than I thought. It looked easy at the top, but got steeper as you continued down.

If you think of trying it out, bring water and pace yourself.

Some enterprising individual should wait at the bottom on a two-seater JetSki, and charge $200 to take people a mile or two south to Empire Beach.

Quick tip: you can walk it diagonally, may take longer but it's way easier climb
  • I did that two years ago. Went on a reckless whim without even a water bottle in hand. It took me about 45 min to climb back up. It was one of the most hardest climb ever. But it was definitely worth it. The views from the bottom of the dune and the feeling of accomplishment after climbing back up made up for it. But I wouldn’t do it again..

Imagine the shape you’d be in if you did that every day
  • I grew up here and made it down and back up in 14min 14sec. That was my personal best!!!!

I was there in July 2022. I took us about 35 minutes to climb back up! This is one of the greatest exercises one can do! Great video!

Climbing a mountain is one thing, I’ve been doing it my entire life, but climbing a mountain of sand is an entirely different beast
  • So the lifeguards are just there to rescue swimmers, laugh at people that don't make it back up, and call the coast guard for them? Damn....

I was just there over the 4th of July and there was a kid there about college aged who made it up in 10 min. It made me wore out just watching him. lol
  • Absolutely stunning view! I climbed that dune about 30 years ago and it is no joke! The sand is what makes it hard. Most people know how hard it is to walk in the sand on the beach but imagine going uphill!

Dude thats insane! Ive seen this hill in my nightmares, never knew it existed in real life. Thanks for sharing!

Easiest after a rain on undisturbed sand as it firms the sand up. Years of hiking Silver Lake sand dunes gave us the opportunity to learn the hard way. Lol

love all the comments saying that they should just install stairs. If you want to go to the beach without the climb, just go down the coast... you really see this gorgeous natural landscape with so much history and story, one of the rarest biomes on earth, and want to put stairs on it?? On a cliff, in sand????
  • For some reason I wanna run this. Love that feeling of the heart about to explode, legs like jelly, sweating buckets.🤙🏽

I’m more impressed that you can hold that camera and keep it aimed at yourself.
  • Watched this because I scaled a hill just like this possibly even more steep with my spouse and sister in law yesterday, she wanted to show me a creek at the bottom. You are not lying when you say going down is deceptive, I almost immediately had to get on all fours to climb back up, I don't know how my spouse and SIL didn't get on all fours. I was so afraid I was going to start sliding back down, because the terrain was very rocky and soft dirt from rain, I think that's partially why my SIL urged me to push on even when I almost passed out from exertion. If I had passed out it would have been all over, I would have plummeted almost 100 feet down into brush and rocky water. I can't believe I made it back up, and it was pitch dark when were headed back up. I didn't mind the dirt on my hands one bit just as long as I made it back up alive, and my hands actually helped me climb faster by ensuring the safety of rocks before my feet are planted on them. Kudos to you for making this video and demonstrating how dangerous it can be!

Imagine you climbed up and forgetting your car keys down there

I did it as a kid back in the 90s. It took me just under 2 hours to climb back up. I think I was about 13 or 14. Love Sleepy Bear Sand Dunes on Lake Michigan.
